What sort of speeds are we talking about? The torque convertor should lock up at around 80kph.
If hwy speeds, have you considered cruise control? I have a couple of cars with aftermarket kits & they're great.

Does anyone else have my problem? While driving other vehicles I normally use the pitch of the engine to maintain a steady speed rather than keep looking at the speedo. But in my auto disco the engine speed varies enormously for a given speed depending on the road contour because of the effective slack in the torque converter. I'm finding it quite difficult.

If you ARE referring to speeds above 80km/h, then the lockup clutch is slipping and the converter probably needs an overhaul.
FWIW, in that situation most places will tell you to get the trans overhauled while its out since its around $800 labour just for the remove/fit. My experience was that I removed the trans and converter myself, had the converter overhauled (around $300) and refitted it all.
30K kms later its all still going fine..
The slipping on mine started happening around 210,000kms

Thanks for response. I'm taking about speeds between 60 and 80. Don't think I've found a long enough straight to get over 80 yet! Will do this weekend and observe.

Put it in "3" around town to reduce the slip and provide a little better economy.
