    3.9 rear oil seal

    Hi,
I posted this on the technical chatter forum a few days ago. It has been read 42 times but so far no response - so thought I might try here if that is OK.

I'm in process of overhauling a 3.9 and was wondering if there are any tips on replacing the rear main oil seal.

The workshop manual recommends that an aligning tool be used to insert the seal. I've no idea where I could get an alinging tool - so hope somebody can help me with some "how to" advice. Would hate to bodge the job and have a leak when the engine is put back in the vehicle.

My initial thoughts were that with the engine out, replacing the seal would be a straightforward job - simply slide over the crank and then push fit into place - or am I viewing the world though rose coloured glasses?
    Regards,
    Paul

Sorry I'm not a special tool type of person. A small block of wood and a hammer usually do me for a rear seal. Just be careful not to force anything, and use a lick of sealant around the perimeter of the seal.

I agree with beeutey.I have just put a new 3.9 in my Disco and did the rear main while it was out.I just used an old 1/2 inch socket extension that I use for odd jobs like this.Really easy to do and I also used a smear of oil on the outside of the seal to help it slide in a little easier.Just be careful when removing the old seal to not scratch or mark the seat for the seal. While the engine was out I also did the front auto trans seal while the engine was out which was more difficult due to the seal not wanting to come out,so I had to take the oil pump assembly off to be able to remove the seal.

    Cheers
