Just a hint, tightening a crank bolt is best done in 4th gear, reduces loading on the hand brake and gearbox.
Hi Guys,
on the weekend I changed the timing belt on my Tdi, question is I struggled to tighten the crank bolt as I couldnt lock the fly wheel due to it being after market without the locking hole, so I put her in Reverse gear and was able to use my torque wrench and tightened it to 220NM,
what are your thoughts? shell be right?
the book says to tighten to 80nm then 90degree turn

Hmm, someone in Melbourne will have the right tool that bolts to the harmonic balancer to do that crank bolt up.
It might cost a beer or three for the use
You don't want that bolt coming loose and wrecking the nose of the crank, then it gets exxy.
The 80Nm + 90* is bloody tight, you need a 3/4" drive socket and bar to do it, I sheared a 1/2" Snap On breaker bar attempting it.
(Ok, it had a 5' length of water pipe on it, but that's what is needed to get it to the right tension)
I just put them in 4th and do them as tight as I can holding against the brakes. I put loctite 243 on the bolt and on the shaft as well to lock the balancer. Done dads car 3 times now, and its never come loose. It's up around 300k on the clock.
I use one of these...

Best tool for the job IMO.

Thanks for the advice guys
Where are you located in Melbourne? I have made the tool to hold the crankshaft pulley so if you are not to far away from Ringwood PM me and we can meet to do it up correctly.
