    Knocking

    Hmmn, I have ignored a vibration that has appeared in the last few days to my peril. I had thought the exhaust was rubbing but the noise has escalated to a very bad knocking so much so I thought i'd done a big end, but no the knock is coming from the trans area so I suspect a loose torque converter or something in that area. The knock is engine driven not there on coast.
    So I was hoping someone may have come across this before????
    Have it parked up now and will start undoing bolts tomorrow.

    have you checked the universals on the tailshafts?

    Noise occurs when stationary or moving so that rules out driveline

    Sounds like cracked Flex plate. Take off the inspection cover and get a screwdriver and try and move the flex plate. When I did this to mine it creaked and groaned and made horrible noises. I then got a torch and turned the motor over by the front pully and then could see the cracks around the bolts.

    I hate to say, but I agree with Bradtot. My Disco is a 98 tdi auto.

    I had a similar noise coming from the back of the motor, immediately thought it was the big ends stuffed, but on closer inspection by my LR mechanic, turns out it was a cracked flex plate. So much so that the only thing holding the flex plate to the central bolt pattern was a small piece of steel that hadn't cracked between two of the 6 bolts...... .

    Any more driving and fix would have been a bit more severe....

    Uni's are easy to rule out, slide under and give them a good shake, should feel no sideways movement. If there is even a smallish amount pull them out asap and put in new ones. They're relatively cheap, but if they let go down the freeway........ no need to explain the result......

    not always, as i tried this with my uni's and there was no movement sideways or any way, the only clue i had was first thing in the morning i took it for a small drive up the road to isolate the noise and when i came home i tried to shake the uni and get movement out of it and still had none. but the clue was all the other parts where cool to touch but the uni near the transfer box was pretty warm but the gearbox flange was not. took tail shaft off and bingo that uni was totally seized . i installed 2 new ones and fixed the problem
