Weak battery, weak starter, weak ignition, poor spark plugs, poor plug leads, bad petrol etc. It should spring to life in the first couple of revolutions if in good nick. Most engines don't flood until after you have tried a couple of times and not got it going. Did you try flooring the accelerator? If it is flooded before the starter is even engaged I would look for leaking injectors or a failed fuel pressure regulator.
