Coolant & Temp question for 98 V8i Discovery

    Hi,

Couple of weeks since i bought a 1998 Discovery V8i with gas and currently working out all the ins and outs as well as the eccentricities that may come with a car this age.

Have been getting gurgling behind the dash - i understand that there may be an airlock in the cooling system - from reading other threads on this site.

I have Three specific answers that I need and I will phrase as questions to be as concise as I can:

1: What is the best coolant to use? - I have green in my system and I topped it up with Nulon Green Long Life Top-Up Coolant (LLTU) about a litre. Is this ok for top ups

2: what is the normal operating temperature on the V8i?? My dash temp guage usually runs at about a quarter from the bottom of the normal range (sits basically where the squiggly lines under the temp character is).

3: What is a reasonable price to pay a mechanic to have cooling system flushed and re-filled?

Any info is appreciated. I want to make sure I look after this car properly.

    Thanks in advance

    John

Hey there, the gurgling sound you mention reminds me of what my v8 used to do when I started it up for a short while then it would go away. I think it says in some manual that this sound is pretty normal, not sure about it if it's still doing it long after you've been driving for a bit though.

I say "used to" because I recently sold it by the way and got a Tdi which I am over the moon about still but I'm sure my old v8 still does the gurgle on startup wherever it is.

    1. The nylon green long life stuff is what I got recommended to me from others on this forum so I'd say you've got the right stuff there.

    2. I think normal operating temp for a v8 is between 90 and 95 but I'm not sure (others will know I'm sure) but I do know that they dash temp gauge is useless...it will get to that spot you're talking about and sit there quickly after startup and won't budge unless the car completely overheats and goes bonkers...otherwise if you want a decent indication of temperature (and to increase your stress levels) then an after market temperature gauge is what you'll need. I want to get one of those for my Tdi just out of interest.

    3. I just had Ritters completely flush and refill my cooling system and it was an extra $100 or so from memory on top of the rest of my service, but if they find that your radiator needs a rodding or replacing it will no doubt cost you more. I really recommend Ritters, they aren't the cheapest but they know their Rovers better than anyone else in Melbourne as far as I know. With my v8 I took it to get rodded once at a place in Croydon and once they cleaned out the gunk they realized the gunk was what was holding in all the water and after it was gone it all leaked out the holes...so I ended up with a total re core

Like I said, I was really happy with Ritters service and knowledge and I won't be going anywhere else again. I highly recommend them and they'll make sure your car is well taken care of.

Its air going through the heater core under the dash.

So you need to bleed the air out at the top rad hose. Which may mean that air is getting into the cooling system from somewhere. I would get and cooling system pressure test done. You may be losing coolant as well which if not fixed will lead to engine failure similar to many V8s that have overheated including mine.

If you dont have the heater on and you hear the noise the valve that blocks the heater core isnt working. Someone else has posted on this before but I cant remember the comment exactly.

or 82 degrees if you have one installed

Operating temp is usally aroung the 90-95 mark, best thing to do though would be get an aftermarket temp guage. I have an el-cheapo one that I connected to the top radiator hose and I can see roughly how hot she is getting. When my viscous fan spat the dummy (Murphys Law it is going to happen in the middle of the bush, on a steep long track with no place to turn around), the factory was only showing just past half way on it's way up to 3/4, not that hot right? not in the red zone right? Wrong, she was bubbling away and water/steam was squirting out of the top of the overflow bottle, she was REAL HOT. I thought I had cooked her for sure, I think I got away lucky. In went the aftermarket temp guage to keep a closer eye on things. Best $30 I have ever spent for safe of mind motoring

    Hey Chomps,

Mine was a blue one but I wouldn't call it "teal" ...or "tiel" ...now I'm confused about spelling!??

The one I sold had about 206K km on the clock but I sold it a little while ago now, a fair bit longer than two weeks ago. I really miss my V8, it was a great car and it sure was a smoother drive than the Tdi but for longer trips and rugged stuff I prefer the Tdi myself. It's just a shame I couldn't convince the wife to drive the second Disco instead of her little buzz box then I could have kept both of them

I've got an Engine Guardian from Carsensors.com off eBay with digital display and alarm set at 105C. Inexpensive to buy, easy to fit and works very effectively.

With distilled water, glycol free Nulon Ultracool and Redline water wetter it reads 82 to 90 in city traffic. The EL fans are programmed to come on at 25% of their capacity at 95, then gradually ramp up as the temp increases (which it potentially may do in 40C city traffic in summer).
