    Whistle

    I have a 300TDI auto - a few weeks ago it developed a whistle, starting at a lower pitch 2000rpm and going higher to 3000rpm+. At the same time it was starting to smoke under load (blue). With the oil in the turbo pipes I figured it was the turbo for noise, bad turbo seals for the oil. So now with a rebuilt turbo, including changeover manifolds (new gaskets etc), the smoke is gone and is running nicely, but the noise is still there exactly the same. Not sure what it is - anyone have any ideas?

    For extra info. It has silicone lower turbo pipes which seem OK, top one is original. Turbo is definitely getting oil. Thought before the turbo, when it wasn't smoking that much, the noise might be transmission related - did a trans service with new filter and a double change of Transmax Z - no changes in noise with that either.

    My guess would be the turbo as well. Did you change/check the wastegate valve as well? Likewise, did you check for blow-by between turbo and intercooler? Sorry, mate, no more ideas...

    Our radiator overflow tank whistles at all passing girls, and if we losen the cap a bit the whistle does stop. Check that first. And if that whistles you may have a overheating problem.

    Don't know if you are interested still but i went into my local diesel mechanic thats Great with Turbo's and he told me look at your gasket did that it it solve the problems with mine might be a simple fix. Also to mention that a lot of patrols suffer from it that was his suggestion to try before working on the turbo saved me a bit of dosh.
