Thread: HELP RWC in Melbourne

Hi Patrick. Rego is about 940, booking is about 40, leaves about 20 to fix the bits that could be bung. Is this how I should read your post? Or do you have 1000 to spend on the fixes?

Then, what are the things that have to be done to get it roadworthy? Can you do stuff yourself?

Just asking so that perhaps help can appear. And VicRoads has cracked down on dodgy ooperators in a large way.

Try Kamakazi motors in Nunawading they are fair but if you have oil leaks dont even think about it no one will pass it with a decent leak. No RWC joint i have used in recent years will cut too many corners but some are more stringent than others. You have to realize its there name on the computer systems as giving your car the OK so if something goes wrong and heaven forbid you get seriously injured you can bet your balls Vicroads will investigate it and they will be put on the stand in the coroners court if the worst happens. If its that bad that the last guys quote was $5000 then what is wrong with it?? Is it yellow and round and bitter to the taste?? Or does it just need a lot of little things that he quoted an axorbitant amount for because he doesnt want to work on a Disco?

Nicho - its the fact he quoted for things that aren't relevant to a RWC, and some things were silly that he quoted for like
"doors hard to open- $90" It took an alan key and 2 mins to fix
"Rear tailgate doesnt unlock - $115" Tryed the key D*%khead?
"Engine needs steam cleaning (no leaks present) - $145" This isnt a RWC issue? it was muddy not covered in grease

There were no 'mechanical' issues like diff/engine/smoke/leaks etc. They were things like the above. Correct me if I'm wrong but as long as the windows work, it doesn't matter if they work from the main control switch or not? I didn't think this was an RWC issue?

I know the brakes need a flush and new pads, some lights replaced and the back wheel bearings - these are things I am prepared to pay for outside my budget because they are 'maintenance things'. I think I will try Kamikaze see what they say... hopefully (damn sure) they would be more qualified than this tool at Kmart TAA at Greensborough.

Do yourself a favor and before you take it for another rwc check stop at the local car wash with a can or 2 of that cheap degreaser you get from all auto stores and give the engine a good clean yourself (take some WD40 in case) a clean engine looks good in the eyes of an inspector. Clean car, clean engine, looked after!! and the doors etc fix them before you take it in, the less obvious things they have to pick the less they are going to look for!

Mate, get the car to AMV in East Ringwood - make an appointment with Greg to check the car over BEFORE you put a spanner on anything more. But before you go, spend some time cleaning the drivetrain, the undercart, the glass, doing the obvious stuff. Then go see him. 9870 9904.

I've never been to AMV but they look good from the website. Don't take that $hit though from a RWC inspection though, I got an inspection done at a place in Ringwood (not AMV) and it brought up all this stuff that I really didn't think should have been an issue. Thought about it for a while and then decided to take it somewhere else and the inspection was much more fair and reasonable...so don't by any means think they're all going to be the same because it depends a lot on the person doing the inspection at the time (and they're mood!) in my opinion. They have their rules but they're still human at the end of the day. Also make sure you're not being shafted on windscreens, look up the rules yourself about those they are pretty clear but a lot of mechanics will just hit you up for a new windscreen regardless as soon as they see that it's a RWC inspection.

I ended up having my RWC done at Autozone in Blackburn/Nunawading and they were good but having said that we haven't seen the condition of your car. I don't think you can go far wrong with a place like AMV though, someone who specializes in Rovers is a pretty good thing...but can be costly too because they might know other problematic things to look out for that other mechanics might not pick up
