I went up two sizes on the original alloy 16" rims when I fitted the 6.5 Chev V8 in my D1. I can't recall the actual size of tyre and "Jimmy" is at the mechanics at the moment having the brake booster looked at - I have had a few exciting moments driving him recently. The tyres fitted boost the gearing about 10%, which is what I was after but they do rub on the radius arms at full lock. I got Jimmy re-sprung after the engine swap (which was done in 2005) and wound up with an overall 100mm lift.

The only body mods for the tyres involved cutting off the corners of the inner rear guards - maybe a 20mm triangle of alloy, as these were catching. I have had the tyres cheep on the guards very briefly at full travel.

I don't drive him much these days - I have just picked up a 3.0 D4 SE, but I will probably go back down one size next time I replace the set.

If you are interested I will check the tyres when I pick him up later this week.

    Cheers

    Al

Do you mean higher or wider or both?

A 235/85/16 would be just fine with a 50mm lift.

That way you also get extra height under the diffs and great when you deflate in the sand.

As far as wider goes, I am not sure as I never go wide, the wider you go the more strain on bearings, steering box increase in fuel etc.

Also when in the bush, u be hard pressed to find any fat tyres.

    Good luck.

i liked the 33's on my disco its just that it slowed it down too much on the bitumen as i didnt change the gering since there not my everyday tyres so hen i replace them i'll go down a size to 32's (which i think is the 255-75-16?) just to make it more driveable as i dont think you would really notice the difference in clearance between them and the 285-75-16 (33's)

I love the difference my 35's make. Its just the $$$$$ i spent on mods to make them fit. I did have another Disco with 32's on it a while back and it was great on moderate tracks. It all comes down to what you expect from it. If you just want to get access to most parks and campsites then you dont need more than 32's. Me i like the old saying "Bigger is better" but any mods come at a cost and its what you need/want versus what your pocket can afford. $1500 should get you a good set of BF AT'S or similar if your not going wider then ur standard rims should be ok. Check ebay or the market place here there is always some good bargains going.

I'd go for 265/70/16's in an A/T for alround driving, its a good size without causing too much stress on the driveline and works well on a tdi.
You will need to wind in the steering stops and if you are offroading a 2" lift and camel cut will suffice.
