I think the early rangies had the tail shaft you want
Hi there
I would like to replace my roto flex'ed (rubber donut thingy) tailshaft with one which has a uni joint both ends.
Can anyone tell me which model landrovers have a suitable tailshaft and flange which suits a 95 Discovery? I can't afford a new one so I'm going to hunt around for a second hand one.
TIA
I think the early rangies had the tail shaft you want
I Paid $150(might have been cheaper) from memory for a good condition tailshaft from an 88RRC for my new diff(from an early 80s RRC) which i'm going to put into at 98 disco once I get time.
Your welcome to come take a look at it and the flange if you need to get an idea of whats needed for yours but I can't really help with the conversion side as I'm swaping centres at the same time
I've been quoted $270US inc postage from the States for the whole kit and caboodle. Unless the local suppliers can come up with something similar I will probably go for that.
That price sounds reasonable and certainly cheaper than when I was looking at kits a while back
My 200 Disco had the shaft with UJ, but to be honest I've found no need to retrofit one to my 98 Disco. I've got quite a few extra inches in the rear and 32" tyres and I haven't needed to change one in the 100,000km I've had my car.
Will probably change it out soon though for peace of mind, but 100,000km seems pretty good to me
Well, for me it is all part of the vibration hunting saga.
Some time back I installed (what was sold as) a two inch lift. It was probably more than two inches though. Immediately after the lift was installed I experienced drive line vibration that was quite severe.
I was advised to change the uni joints and rotoflex which I did. This did not fix the vibration. I then installed 32" muddies. No change in the vibration but the car went a lot better in the mud.
Yesterday I installed cranked and strengthened trailing arms. This had the effect of allowing the rear to go a bit higher and worsened the vibration considerably.
Looking under the car the drive shaft comes into the diff at quite an angle. This is clearly compressing the rotoflex at the top. I can only think that this cannot be a good thing.
Additional to all this is the fact that I know the bushing inside the current tailshaft is shot, which wont help the vibration aspect. At least with a new tailshaft this will be sorted also.
That is the whole long and sorry saga.
Once I get this sorted I will probably be looking at relocating the top bracket for the shocks, and then onto cranked control arms for the front (which will probably mean I will need a double carden front shaft).
It's all good fun.![]()
Haha never ending
I've had a vibration develop recently but I think its more a shimmy from the front end (swivel bearings again have a bit of movement) and one rear wheel is a tad buckled. The pre-update Disco have the parts you're after
Amazing.
$250US for the parts to be delivered to Perth from the US,
OR
$300AUS for the parts to be delivered to Perth from Adelaide.
I have just done this myself and I used the shafts from my old 86 Rangie and the flange from the front diff that was from a 97 Disco. One point to remember when changing the rear flange is to make sure you are supplied the inner spacer which is about 12mm deep or there will be a lot of back lash. Also regarding the vibration have you checked the radius arm bushes and the panhard rod bushes?.These were gone on an old 79 2 door Rangie I had years ago and caused the worse vibration I have ever experienced and I could only drive under 60 km until it was fixed.
