    "300 Tdi's don't have timing belts mate"

Went to my local mechanic today and enquired about getting the timing belt changed and was politely told that it doesn't have a timing belt, I told him it did and he said no mate it's got all metal covers at the front, if it had a timing belt it would have a plastic one. Also he said push rod engines don't have timing belts only OHC engines.

So now it looks like I need to find another mechanic, shame really because he's a nice bloke. Anyone know a good mechanic down Wollongong way? or it might be a trip to the dealer.

Yes I would be definitely looking for another mechanic. There are some how to threads on here with pictures some where. Take a copy to him and say told you so. Good luck finding a good local mechanic, some one in the area should know one.
    Cheers, David.

take in a lappy with net access and ask what the bloke on the tdi replacement timing belt thread is working on so you can correct the thread.

A little knowledge can be very dangerous!!!

Take the family on a holiday near a good mechanic and stay in a nice hotel and make a night of it. The minor servicing can be done at home, engine oil is most critical in those donks.

A while a ago I had a '74 Targa Porsche which broke down in Broken Hill SA on a trip. I dropped the car off to the bloke who had to simply fix a leak on down-draught carbies on RHS of motor.

When I got back he done nothing, he never seen a flat six motor with six carbies before and could not get his head around it.He also could not find the batteries, I did say they were immediately behind the headlights and there were 2 of them.

Quite amazing in this day and age really.

I remember this job, I hated it. It was a great car, but this was something I dreaded doing. Moved on to other problems now.
