    D1 Update ignition barrel

Think my ignition barrel has crapped itself, it's been playing up for a while, not being able to turn the ignition at times feeling as though the steering lock was on.

But today it took us nearly an hour to actually get a key to turn in the ignition, I assume the barrel is buggered.

Does anyone know what a new one is worth and how hard are they to swap over ?

Import from the UK $45 + delivery. Buy locally for ~$125. (For whole ignition lock assy, need to replace shear bolts also though.)

Removal & Fitting - according to RAVE:

    • Steering wheel off (and airbag if fitted)
    • upper and lower shroud off
    • Wiper stalk off
    • Lights/indicator stalk off
    • Undo ignition multiplug, two bolts and the ignition switch is out
    • Reverse above for refitting

"Official" repair time is 0.8 hours if that gives you a clue as to the complexity

I got mine repaired by a locksmith in Braeside (SE Melb) . It is a common problem, the barrel wears and the key goes too far in. Cost me about $150 and has been fine for 3 years.

Obviously replacement is the best long term option but then you also have to add the cost of having the keys matched.

I changed mine a few months ago, i got it from paddocks for about the same as the price above

I ended up using a cold chisel to remove the barrel, cutting through the barrel mounts until it fell off, it probably took 20 minutes after stuffing around for ages trying to knock the bolts loose from the top and after removing the steering wheel etc

Don't know how long my repair will last - squirted WD40 into the keyhole and no problems since.

Try some graphite powder using any oil or liquid in locks attracts dirt. Graphite powder is availible from bunnings and is very cheep. I had the same problem with my ignition and after using the powder in the lock all is good did all the other locks at the same time.
