    Oil Filter change tip

Thanks to whoever it was on the forum who recommended using a two litre milk carton to remove the oil filter. I tried it on the weekend and it worked a treat and not a single drop of oil spilt and this time no pool of oil sitting on top of the front diff ; )
Simply sliced the top off an old 2lt plastic milk carton and placed it around the filter whilst unscrewing it and then let the filter drop into the carton. I'm sure anyone who's changed the oil on a Disco TDI has had the pleasure of oil run down their arm, well at least for the first time. I used to use plastic bags to catch the filter but still messy and the carton method is much cleaner.
    Cheers

Yay thanks for that one, I need to change the oil on my Tdi and I probably would have gone the "oil down arm" road if I hadn't read that

Another handy container to try is a 4 litre plastic coolant or oil container, with the side cut off, leaving the handle and screw top in place. This slides nicely from the front above the steering links and sits on top of the diff as a mini drain pan. I drop the filter straight into this and leave it there for a while letting the oil drain into it. After that you can pull it out the same way with the filter on its side in the container - no mess.

Thanks mate, I just did my first oil change on my new disco and made a real mess of the garage floor. I started to undo the oil filter then it slipped and landed on the floor, oil everywhere.

I was going to ask if there was an easier way to get the filter off. seeing as I don't have large milk containers I will try the oil container on it's side and see how I go.

Do you guys use the Z89A or the Z9 oil filters on the 300tdi?

I didn't realise until I went to change my oil that the disco was fitted with a Z9, I had bought a Z89a for it. The Z9 is cheaper, so would like to use that if it is considered a good alternative.

    Can I also use a Z9 on the 200tdi?

    Thanks,

    Neale

    Hi Neale,
Sorry to hear about your workshop floor and have done the same thing as they are slippery buggers when the oil coats the sides.
I've always used the Z89 filter with anti drain back valve but not sure if this does anything considering its mounted upright. Some say you can use the Z9 but as they are longer you have to make sure they don't come into contact with the top of the diff when suspension at full compression.

    cheers
