Sounds like it's normally an earth problem, see here
Hi All,
I recenlty purchased a 1997 LD Discovery 1 V8i as a weekend toy for the family. When I picked it up I put in about 35 liters of fuel (as the fuel light was on). It gave me just over 1/4 of a tank so I thought "that seems about right".
I drove it for a bit, to just under the 1/4 tank mark, then today put in another 35 litres, expecting to now have around 3/4 of a tank, only to find the guage still only shows just over 1/4 tank!!
Are thre any common issues with the LRD1 guages, sender units etc that would manifest in this way?
Any help or nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Thanks Dave.
I had read about the bad earth issue but discounted that as a cause as the Temp Guage appears to be functioning normally. I figure if its an earth issue with the cluster then both guages would have issues, but ive been wrong before!
The pump assembly is quite easy to remove if you can lift the load floor carpet. Undo the hatch in the floor, check the sender float on the pump unit.
Thanks. I'll check that out this weekend.
What are the chances of it being the sender as opposed to the guage?
tested the gauge as suggested by bee utey and it checks out OK.
Now I guess I'll fill it to the brim and see what the reading is.. If still not reading full I guess a new sender is in order.
Before you fill it up. Since you know the wiring and gauge are ok.
Pull the pump/sender out of the tank and move the float arm up and down and see what the gauge does.
If it works then the float is not floating. If it doesn't work then the sender unit is stuffed.
If the sender is stuffed then you will need a whole new pump unit. If the float is stuffed you can probably adapt something.
