Clunk into first gear coming to a stop

I know it could be any of a variety of things, but does anyone know what woud be causing my D1 V8 Auto to clunk into first gear when coming to a stop.

This might be completely normal as I'm new to Landrovers, but it doesnt "feel" right.

It remindes me very mich of the way my 40 series LandCruiser behavied when the Detroit locker disngaged when the power came off.

Its quite smooth through the gear changes, up and down, unitl coming to a stop from 2nd to first where there is a solid "clunk" and jolty downchange.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is it normal?

Usually just backlash in the LT230 or could be the ball joint in the rear axle.

Because the LT230 is a gear driven transfer , it will always have more backlash than a chain drive case, which most modern 4x4s have.
If it is excessive however you should first look at the transfer case oil to see if there is any silver bits, and/or take it to a LR specialist and ask them to look at the transfer.

DUDE Its and Auto and if your having to down change with an auto manually then you have a braking problem. I have an auto V8 disco and when I'm out in playing and in low range i will not put it into first gear unless I'm almost stopped or it will always CLUNK there is so much force going through the drive line with the weight of the disco travelling at a higher speed than first gear shifts up at then to shift down at that speed will always clunk. ITS MECHANICAL SYMPATHY to be patient and shift down after your speed has reduced and get ready for that down hill run. If you feel you need to manually shift all the time then you should have bought a manual version. Auto driving of a 4wd is very different, you need to be patient and learn what your particular truck does before you go slamming through the gears

Thanks fo the reply BUT i never mentioned anything about changing gears manually. The auto changes into first gear when IT feels it needs to, just does so with a clunk!

Mine's a 300Tdi auto and usually clunks as I pull up. Seems to be normal as everything else is working fine after 400K

Yes they change to first on stopping. The 14CUX raises the idle to about 1100RPM to smooth the change. You may notice it come down to normal 750 +- as you come to a complete halt.

I dunno if the diesels are different to petrol but mine only clunks if i put it into first manually and thats with a detroit rear locker. other than that its nice and smooth with the usual clunks you expect with a locker. But mine has only done 175k so maybe that makes a difference too. Just telling it how it works for me.
