Speedo Transducer condition
Hi All,
I have intermitant speedo issues once at highway speeds eg, 100km/h or more where speedo will have a fit for a little bit then go back to normal. Since this has started my cruise no longer functions.
All hoses are fine on the cruise so I thought first I'd pull out the speedos transducer to have a squiz of its condition but once I got it out I wasnt sure what its supposed to be like anyway....
My question is, does the black round centre with the gear drive in it float about in the external housing as factory or is mine caput? It looks like it needs some form of grease?
It wont pull out but it seems to have alot of sideways play in its housing.
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers,
Rez

Anyone know whether the centre is supposed to float in the housing with a fair bit of play?

I read somewhere on a UK forum that the center of the drive is supposed to be square but end up round after wearing out which results in the erratic speedo. I 'll see if I can find the post.

Found the post
Disco 1 speedometer - Land Rover Zone
Re: Disco 1 speedometer
Just to update - took the transducer out this evening and discovered that the short square bit that locates in the drive in the transfer box had in fact worn round . There was a tiny bit left square in near the transducer which showed what the rest of it should be like .
It was also loose and worn and no sign of lubrication - I would have thought oil from the transfer box would have kept it lubricated ?

Cruise control gets a signal from the speedo, so if the speedo stops, so does the cruise.

Drive is still square but the whole centre section seems to float in its housing more than I'd have thought is standard.
The cruise no longer works at all even when speedo is working. Speedo works 90% of the time.
Should it be lubed?
I'm thinking I'll just buy another....

***** Word of advice when replacing the transducer.
Make sure you get the alignment 110% correct before tightening the screw.
To me, the angle is a bit confusing if you just bung it in & tighten it up, (look at it in your hand prior to fitting) especially as it is in an awkward position & I found a long flexible shaft extension is a big advantage in getting the socket/Allen key on the head.
Fit it with care or you may have to buy another new one.
Be warned.

Ok so for future reference, got the new part and it floats around in the housing just as much and is not lubed.
