245/75R16 is a good mid tyre size for a disco tdi.

Hi all,
I've been running 235/85-16's on the old pile and lately 265/75's.
OE's are 225/75 I think. Here's the thing. The tall ones are great tourers to cruise at 110kph on just 2300rpm, but pulling 5th at low rpm seems to be molesting the gear box a bit.
Any recomendations here. Is there something you can get in a Muddie or AT (decent stuff) in a size between the OE's and the Tallies that works well on these old piles? The truck is always heavy and shaped like a brick into the wind and spends 90% of it's life covering long hauls on dirt and corregations.
Cheers,
Bill

245/70 or 245/75 is a perfect size but i think 265 is better, my tdi feels much beter on the 265's and just seems to pickup quicker and cruise effortlessly, only downside is speedo under reading and scrubbing if you dont have a lift/ guard trim.

it depends on how you want to define "Best"
BFG AT2 is available in an intermediary size but I havent seen them used yet on a disco, there are a couple of options
but IMHO....
for touring work if you want to do it in a D1 without spending unreasonable amounts of money and making life hard I think the best allround solution is a 2 inch lift (done when your existing springs and shocks need replacing) with the 7.50R16's and a camel cut on the back end followed up by either a lower range Tcase gear set Or 4.11 CWP's

The t/fer case ratios are something I've thought about actually. The BFG 235/85 and lately the 265/75's have already customised the wheel arches, so a camel cut will be a way of tidying it all up. How would 750x16's go with a 7" wheel? Thanks for the feedback.
Cheers,
Bill
If you've got standard D1 rims on you'll be fine.

standard suspension with 225/75/16 has got me everywhere living up here in the pilbara, 90% offroad driving
to be very honest unless you are prepared to spend quite a large amount of time and money on the old girl you are probably better off sticking with tyres up to around the 245 size.
i cant speak for a 300 but it aint a power house
I'm running 275/70/16's but I have also fitted a tweeked 4.6 to it
