    starter motor problem ? tdi

    hi everyone i have a problem with my 98tdi auto after towing my van for around 2/3hours this problem has arissen . on stopping the car for a break i have been unable to turn the motor over this has only happened twice ,on most occasions everything is ok yes the engine is hot when the starter fails to operate i have a clicking sound at the starter motor . ive gone through the auto selector but to no avail what i have found that after half to one hour of letting the car sit ive been able to start with no trouble could it be a wire or something overheating. any help on what to look at would be greatly appreciated cheers and thanks once again

    starter solenoid on the starter motor. or depending on year model it may be the spider under the dash

    I had this problem to the point where it stopped clicking after a whlie too and started happening when even car wasn't that hot changed the starter never had a drama again..I also had sluggish starting in winter too was something to do with the flex plate
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    I also recently had this problem, for a while I found that if I loosened and tightened the big connection on the solenoid it would start OK - got me going a few times but the problem would come and go randomly. I priced a solenoid but it was nearly as much as a whole new starter. Reco starters from an auto electrician don't necessarily use all new parts, they are mostly checked over for serviceability (so they told me), so I went with an aftermarket from British Car Components in North Melb for the same price as the reco with no core. Bosch ones are a few hundred dollars more and were unaffordable for me. No probs with the aftermarket one, now starts better than it ever did.

    Best advise I can give you is get the bloody Immobiliser/spider moved from on top of the dash behind the stereo and put it under the dash/instruments. while your at it check the solder on the circuit board and reapir it. You'll never have starting issues again unless it's the starter or the battery. The clicking also indicates bad battery or connection to the battery. ie; not enough amps.
