For the back door, try tightening up the screws holding the lock in the door, and the striker - No 3 Phillips. Both can loosen but especially the lock.
Hey guys have got a couple of general disco questions i have a 96 D1 v8 and on low revs (below 1000 rpm) it sounds like the serpentine belt is slipping but goes away when revved above that. had fitted a new belt about 10000kms ago, any ideas? also my back door clunks and rattles away when driving along was wondering if there was anything i could do to tighten it up. probably doesn't help having a 35x12.5 tyre hanging off it.

for the squeeking take your belt off and check all the pulleys don have play in them..
also check your belt tensioner isn't failing
also a shiney backed belt could also do it, try changing to a rough backed belt that has also helped me in the past

Thanks for that checked the door and on the plastic block that supports the door, two of the screws were flogged out, one missing leaving only one to support the block hence the door rattling. how do you check the belt tensioner is failing?
I run a 35 on the back door too so keep an eye on it. After a big thump the 35 can help the lock mech forget what it was there for. Ending in removal of door trim and a few hours to get it working again. Like I am think about a swing away tyre holder. If your belt is fairly new try adjusting it, they do stretch over time its not always about a pulley wearing etc. I check my belt every service and mine is now due for a change so I know it will need regular adjusting while it wears into place.
I'm interested to know how you adjust a serpentine belt on a 300?

the AC belt is manually tensioned.

Missed the question changing halfway through the thread, sorry for the confusing post. Re posted as below.
Dullbird - The 300 TDI has a separate belt for the A/C, but the serpentine can still not be adjusted other than aligning a worn tensioner with the tried and many times posted 5 cent piece at 9 o-clock.
Robert's serpentine isn't that old, but if it got any contaminants on it such as coolant it could make it squeak. Try taking it off, washing it in soapy water, clean the pulleys and maybe even put it on facing the other direction. Check the alignment of the pulleys. Maybe get a new bearing for the tensioner, most bearing shops will have them (the circlip is a bit fiddly but can be removed with a small screwdriver), but way cheaper than a whole new unit.
