Thread: Cruise Control Vacuum Pump

this can be a poop,
i love my cruise control.
pull the pump out ,
prise the bottom of it and try to work it with a battery and clip leads on the plug pins,
the main problem is dunking it and the solenoid sticking , fiddle with it and you may find it is corroded ir just gooped with gunk.
clean it with a spray like wd40 and try to move the pump crankshaft to see if it is siezed.

i have managed to ressusitate mine a few times, now i have mounted it a bit higher up.
any probs, pm me.

Ok I've pulled it apart and connected power to it and its working well. Insides were clean luckily.

What should I try next????

Hey Rezley I am at approximately the same point with mine, replaced all rubber hose, checked pump which operates the diaphragm correctly, checked fuses, steering wheel switch and brake switch are operating, have not checked transducer (is it the same one as for the speedo therefore speedo works transducer is working?). So I am left with fault in either rotary coupler or ecu?

Yep sounds like we are at the same point. I've not checked the steering wheel controls as I've not fully read up on removing these bit with airbags.

If your speedo is working then the speedo transducer should be fine. Mine worked but occasionally jumped around when at highway speeds so I replaced it with a new one just to rule it out.

Do a search on cruise controls on this forum, all the info you need is there. Even a diagnostic spreadsheet. This came from a bloke in Holland who repairs the ECU. He did mine 2 years or more ago and it still works. And he claims his repair is better than original. There is another diagnostic item as well.

Hi Rez

I take it that you activated the motor ... and .... the solenoid (relay) of the pump.


I find the common cause of failure to be ....

Disconnect the rubber vacuum hose from the pump
Stick it in your mouth
Now suck on it
Watch the bladder on the accelerator move
Does it hold position?
Do you just keep sucking air?

The rubber hose gets a lot of heat from the motor and splits at joints and around the Brake booster area where it enters the firewall .... The hose ends up at a plastic valve / switch, at the brake pedals

Sucking will reveal all ... Have a look

Sucking makes accelerator bladder move. When blowing or sucking, there is no give in system therefore should be not where for air to release. I replaced hoses around a year ago.

I wish it was a simple fix like that.
