    Alternator issues

    hey guys i was having some electrical issues the other day took the car down to the auto elec and they said the aftermarket alternator on my 200tdi was only 40A and too small said it was a tractor one and it had burnt itself out.... im just summing up my options and does anyone know of a good place to get a 90A or something at a good price or what other alternators i can use to replace mine with not too much adaption

    V8 or diesel?

    I would hazard a guess at it being diesel,as it is a 200Tdi

    Yeah it's a diesel and not sure of the type of belt it's just comes off my steering pump n the belt is the one with the triangular notches underneath

    thats the serpentine jobby.... umm idiot, notches not grooves......

    the 40a Alternator should have been plenty to deal with the electrical requirements of the vehicles that had the tdi200 in them.

    Try somewhere like paddocks in the UK for the cheapest bolt in bits but my main money says you're best of ringing MR automotive in Redcliffe QLD.

    Paddocks want $158 to frieght an alternator to Australia (alternator $150), buy one local, Karcraft in Silverwater, Sydney, should be able to help, Regards Frank

    To repent for my sins I took a few minutes to search for something to show whether 200tdi is Vbelt or serpentine. A video of a 200tdi timing belt change clearly shows a vbelt alternator.
    With a v belt you should be able to easily adapt a common Bosch 1285 alternator from a early 90s Magna, or Falcon .
    I am surprised that the auto electrician did not immediately see the potential. They cost about $200 brand new and parts are available anywhere. It should only be a matter of maybe modifying the adjuster, and changing the plugs.
    The electrician may have to run a wire from a field circuit for the tacho, and diddle about from his parts tin to find a pulley of similar diameter to the 200tdi one.
