Its A diy job if you've purchased a barrel, hardest thing is getting a set of matching door key locks...

removing the anti tamper bolts is a bit of a PITA but its doable with the right gear. but before you goto all that effort have you tried dusting the locking mechanism with graphite powder?

You know the problem though. What it did to you it is doing alot of the time now!

btw, starter motor Q, so can I safely assume that a dodgy starter motor can cause all sorts of running problems because it simply isn't starting the car correctly? I'm blown away by how all the idling issues have just disappeared and the fuel consumption is back down to around 20L/100K since changing it.

The plan is to try and fix that oil leak this week, get a couple of new tyres near the end of the week, get that spot welded where it's leaking on the radiator where the oil cooler pipes fit, then do the ignition barrel.

So worst case scenario I could end up with one key for door locks and a different key for ignition, yeah?

graphite powder comes in a small plastic container with a fine nozzle so it can be blown into small / tight areas. It is messy stuff but very good as it doesn't paste and gunk up like oil will as it collects dust since it is a powder.

I haven't bought any in years but I would suggest any auto shop or hardware store would sell it.

Not sure about the engine running so much better since changing the starter motor? I think it is more likely that you may have had an electrical / earthing problem and in changing the starter has fixed it.

but what ever the reason if it's running better then thats a bonus

If you can get hold of a spray can of -

Super Lube
Multi-Purpose Synthetic Lubricant with Syncolon (PTFE)

The propellant carries the 'teflon' to where it's needed and then evaporates quickly to leave a lubricant that doesn't attract dust etc.

I used it on my D2 ignition barrell - which was becoming very difficult to turn the key in - almost 3 years ago and haven't had a problem since. Have also used it successfully on door locks around the house where graphite powder had previously been used with limited success.

I bought the 6oz can from a local locksmith.

if you go either the graphite or the PFTE in a can solution go one way and one way only...

mixing the 2 leads to interesting results.

You probably had poor connection on the battery terminals , and by removing and replacing you fixed it, and that was the source of your other problems.
I find the little graphite puffers very effective , but it is dirty stuff so wear gloes and have a rag handy.
