brake problems
Hi everyone, here we go again. About 12 months ago the anti-lock light started to remain on after starting intermitently. I was able to turn the motor off and then restart and the light would disappear. Now the problem has reappeared this time with slightly different symptoms. The light is now on more often than not but the new problem is when I put my foot on the brake the abs kicks in, the brake pedal pulses and emmits a strange sound like a spring getting stretched. When this happens it does not seem to be braking correctly. I have had my wheel bearing checked, all ok. Had the wheel sensors checked electrically, all ok, all done by my local mechanic. Can anyone please advise me if I was to take it to the landrover repair guy in Geelong (Hunter Cuthill, very very expensive) and they put it on their computer, would they be able to diagnose the problem or is it a case of it somewhere near the abs/etc, or should I take it to a brake specialist. We have had the car for many years and it has never made these noises when braking which happens regardless of the light being on or off. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I think this could be quite serious. Thanks

I had the same problem soon after buying mine. Bloody scary at times. ABS would kick in, strange spring noise, almost complete lack of stopping power. Then one day the symptoms just disappeared. After some investigating I found that the main fuse for the ABS system had blown, which effectively disabled the system. The brakes have never been better. I would much rather have strong non-abs assisted brakes, than the crappy system Landrover put into my D1.
Hope this helps

have you tried the flasher method to check the faults and reset any that have occurred.
It is really easy to do and told me that my issue was a faulty brake pedal switch and not the sensor (phew!)
I'll try and find the link to the method and interpretations.

here is the link:

I think this one covers the mark 1 and 2
Mark 1 is a blue connector under drivers side (that's mine and like I said is easy to do)
Good luck

Hi
Had the same problem as you did with the 50% works/ don't work. I prepared myself for ripping the hubs to pieces or buying expensive ABS sensors. But it all got fixed when I changed the wheels for the winter. My guess is that some dirt had blocked the sprocket wheel in the hub or the end of the sensor. When the tire-guy had problems of getting the wheels of he bashed the side of the wheel with a sledge (on the rubber, not the rim and the car in the air) and after that it's worked every time. I'm not saying that will fix your problem but it's an easy try. It could be that my winter tires are better balanced but I hardly think that would matter.
