I'd pull it apart, remove the axle tube seal (slide hammer is probably the easiest way) and use an RTC3511 double lipped/double energised hub seal instead of the one you used and let diff oil flow through to the bearings.
Hi all,
Replaced the rear wheel bearings ('97 D1) a couple of weeks ago and now the passenger side hub looks to be leaking a significant amount of diff oil. I've done wheel bearings in the past without problem, so I'm thinking I've damaged the inner seal (ftc5268) putting the drive shafts back in. Does this sound right? If so, is there any tricks in replacing those and will I need some sort of seal puller to remove it?
My other thought was that I'd put the new outer seal (ftc4785) in back to front but I assume that seal primarily acts to keep the bearing grease in, rather acting to keep the diff oil from leaking into the hub from the axle housing...
I also vaguely remember reading about a rear hub conversion to allow the alxe diff oil to lubricate the wheel bearings. If this means removing the inner seal, then how do you prevent the leak that I'm having now?Is there a more effective outer seal to use?
I'd pull it apart, remove the axle tube seal (slide hammer is probably the easiest way) and use an RTC3511 double lipped/double energised hub seal instead of the one you used and let diff oil flow through to the bearings.
Thanks for the advice; I'll fit the RTC3511 seals as suggested and run the wheel bearings in oil.
Providing that part no. also allowed me to find a lot of useful advice on the the forum about how to correctly fit them, so thanks for that too.
That's good you've found the other threads as I forgot to mention that the double lipped seal needs to mounted 4mm below the hub face.
