Help needed - clutch problem
Hi all
I'm in need of a bit of help - sort of stranded in Tamworth with a 94 300TDi. This morning leaving Coolah Tops NP I noticed the clutch started loosing pressure and the pedal not returning properly. I can 'pump' the pedal and get pressure back into the system and all goes well for a while.
Seeking advice from anyone who can point me in the right direction, either in terms of what the problem might be, or who to go to here in Tamworth to get a repair done. Got accommodation booked in Mooloolabah this week and a site on Bribie later on that I would like to get to use.
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Hey KevG, you most certainly will have checked the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder as a first point of check, what you found there will help determine the problem, also check that the reservoir venting arrangement is in fact working. You may need to re-kit or totally replace the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder or both, so if your clutch master reservoir fluid level is dropping that can mean a fluid pressure line (from master to slave) or slave cylinder seal leak. On the other hand worn out/failed rubbers in the master cylinder will not necessarily loose fluid from the system because the master has a back up seal to contain the fluid from leaking back into the pedal rod area, so when you press down on the pedal the front most seal allows fluid to escape back and into the actuator piston cavity, from there the fluid will pass back up into the reservoir, so no apparent loss occurs, except the clutch action is effected and may not fully disengage.
I have read in this forum also that the clutch actuator arm in the bell housing can wear through at its fulcrum point, (a ball headed screw in bolt arrangement) but that is a non-recoverable failure, i.e once that occurs no more clutch ever until the 'box removed and new arm installed.
A throw out bearing/clutch diaphragm finger failure is accompanied by much munching noise, so it's not this if no such noise when clutch depressed.
Would suggest that you consult the yellow pages and seek out the local NON DEALER Landrover workshop/parts supplier, unless you are prepared to donate an arm and a leg, Tamworth is a large enough country centre to have at least one of these, you can perhaps source the parts and/or maybe assistance to do the job yourself, it is not a particularly hard task.
I am an ex Newcasle lad so If you could make it to Newcastle there is a good Land Rover mob there called "All 4X4 spares, they can supply parts and or carry out the work at a realistic cost, they are in the Newcastle yellow pages, good luck with it all.

Thanks Gazby
I'm now back on the road and a fair bit lighter. I found a seal kit and supplied it to the local NRMA mechanic and he fitted it to the slave cylinder. Problem was partly that an partly wear on the fork and fulcrum. We sourced replacement parts and a new heavy duty clutch kit and are now back on the road - a fair bit poorer but the Disco drives a whole lot better with the new kit installed.
Funny how a slowly degrading part can go unnoticed until a fairly catastrophic failure occurs.
