    Heavy Steering

Does anyone have any idea what would cause steering to become heavy all of a sudden. one minute power next no power.

Checked your PAS fluid level? Belt good and tight?

Fluid level & belt correct. Replaced hose, filled with fluid, turned steering wheel several times from lock to lock , took for test drive & got back home to find no power assist.

If it goes hard -easy-hard- easy then ity may be that a UJ has siezed on the steering column.

It's very hard all the time when vehicle is stationary, at idle & at all revs.

Also steering is like the old armstrong steering, ie. pre power steering.

Well it's either the pump or box.Or outside chances of a siezed damper or tie rod end.Or a UJ.

I would think that if the pump you would have oil gushing out the shaft as it would need the pump rotor to have broken away from the shaft. Have you checked the pump shaft for freeplay? Is it noisy?

Maybe loosen the input pipe nut on the steering box and see if there is pressure there.

Have a look at the damper and maybe remove it.

If no answer then undo the tie rod at the end of the pitman arm ,separate the steering link and see whare the stiffness is.

Thank you gentlemen, took punt on still going on holiday with problem. Was going to take to steering specialist or someone with pressure guages to check. drove from Melb to Castlemaine, when I got here no more issues. Can only put it down to air lock in system. This suprised me as it was the return line that was repaired.
