    no drive in disco

hey guys i have a 95 v8 auto disco and i was driving to work the other day and stopped at a set of traffic lights, all the sudden the car started making a whining noise, i then lost all forwards n backwards drive, i tired accelerating but all that happened was the tacho and speedo where moving up, the more i accelerated the louder the whine got, i also tired in low range but no result, there was no noises prior to when it happened.
any ideas of what it could be would be much appreciated,
    cheers

Most obvious guess a broken rear axle, try engaging Center diff & see if it drives on the front. Logically speedo would not be working if rear propshaft isnt spinning.

Sounds like you may have stripped the spline inside the transfer case input gear. I,m not sure where the speedo drive comes from, but if it is of the gearbox output shaft then that would help prove my theory Yours being an auto you only have to remove the transfer case to do the repair.

P.s. Just read previous post, if the speedo cable comes from the T/C output shaft, then previous post is more likely
