Thread: 3.5L to 3.9L engine conversion

I have only changed a 3.5 to a 3.9EFI in my IIa and its not complete.

From what i recall:

Fan location is different - need the upgrade shroud

Hose outlet at top of motor is different and radiator top in/outlet is different - need the upgrade hose and radiator

ECU can be done by using just a couple of wires from the loom - not complex - see Outerlimits thread from Ruff re the wires to be used ie ignition on, start and pump I think it was - there wasn't much.

Exhaust is different, but I used the 3.5 manifolds and retained the old exhaust system.

Throttle cable is different.

Heater hoses are different.

Induction hoses and box are different

Will bolt up to chassis and gearbox fine.

Not sure re PAS hoses as this is still to be done.

Having done something similar (reverse, early motor to later vehicle) recently I suggest you swap the inlet manifold and the front cover with all its accessories off the old motor. Manifold off makes it much easier to get at the bell housing bolts.

Will that be necessary though, as i will be getting all other bits (alt, p/s pump, airbox etc) with the new motor? Or is that so you dont have to swap any wiring around?

Speaking of which haven't been able to find Ruff's Outterlimits thread. Could someone please post up a link?

It's a lot quicker changing the front cover than extending wiring, hoses and regassing air conditioners. Use the later stuff only if you have spare time and cash.
