    3.9V8 intermittant starting issue

    Hey guys
wondering if you can help, I have a D1 3.9 that starts first time straight away and runs fine once going, but occansionally, it just winds over but doesn't want to even look like firing. You can roll start it fine, and again, once it is going, runs fine.
Doesn't matter if it's cold, warm or hot, just sometimes doesn't want to play the game.
What should I start to look at ?
    Cheers,

Are you waiting the 3 seconds until you hear the click of the relay cutting off fuel after priming?

If the car has been sitting a while you may need to wait for the relay, turn off, then turn on again for another 3 seconds. Then start.

Remember as these cars get old the non return valve in the fuel pump gets leaky, and the Fuel pressure regulator also gets leaky.
Try what I posted and see if it helps.
If not You may have bigger problems.

    Thanks for the reply Phillip,
Yeah you can leave it on for ages, you can wind and wind, but wont fire. Doesn't matter if it been sitting for a while, or you have switched it off for half an hour.
What are these bigger problems you speak of..

The ECU will cut off fuel after 3 seconds so that the engine does not flood. You do not leave the ignition on for a long time as this achieves nothing and do not wind on the starter.

If it doesn't start straight away after the 3 seconds , then turn it to "off" , then "on" wait until the relay clicks then to "start" and try again , only for a short time.

If it hasn't started then it may be flooded as you may have drooling injectors. In that case put the accelerator to the floor and hold it still DO NOT PUMP.This activates the anti flood circuit and no fuel will be injected and it should clear.
If it still doesn't start and mine did this once, I removed the fuel pump relay and hit the starter. After a short spin the engine fired. I replaced the pump relay and it started fine. This happened when I started it dead cold then switched off after moving 4 metres out of the garage and shutting down.

    Other problems!!!
Well it could be lots of things.
Old plugs, old plug leads, old or aftermarket rotor, old dizzy cap. It is a good idea to replace all of these things as the first stage of troubleshooting as this eliminates them as a source and they are relatively cheap.

Old fuel pump, old pressure regulator, drooling old dirty injectors,

Give the above a go and if you still have a problem we will go further.
