    Question Ironman Suspension Kits ???

    Hi

Has anyone had any experience with the ironman 40mm lift kit, for a Disco 1, (i have a 98 TDI auto), i want to do a lift, but on a budget, the car mainly gets used on weekends because i am still at school, i have already collected the rear end once and have fitted a winch and bullbar today so the front looks a bit saggy . Anyway, the Kit is advertised on Ebay for $690, comes with 0-300kg springs, and nitro charger shocks, i also see kits for $860 that have foam cell shocks, i still want to maintain the flex so what would be the best way to go if i buy an ironman kit, the car does do a few country k's but nothing to major. if anyone has had experience good or bad i would love to hear, thanks in advance

    Hi MrLr
I have had the Ironman kit on my 97 Disco for nearly 12 months and for the most part it does the job.
It has sagged slightly, at the back more than the front. It originally sat higher at the back than the front, which was what I wanted so it would take the weight of my camper trailer, but it now sits nearly level.
That is my main whinge about the kit, it was rated to carry about 300kg (?? from memory) and my camper's 100kg ball weight is enough to make it sit slightly lower at the back with no other weight in the car.

Apart from that, it handles well on dirt roads, and flexes well offroad.

Thanks Tim, just out of interest, do you have the Nitro Gas or Foam cell shocks on your kit, i think i will go the Nitro Gas as they are cheaper and i won't do much touring, i'll probably do a bigger lift in a few years etc., that would be OME or something else up there

    Thanks again

I had the Foam Cells installed.
The other thing to think about with a lift is castor and camber changes.
I was told the 45mm lift would not require any changes, and that's mostly true.
But there was a definite change in steering feel - it fidgets and tramlines more, there is less on-centre feel.
Nothing too bad or dangerous, but you have to be on top of what the car is doing more.
On chopped up bitumen ( most of the highways in SEQ at the moment ) it is not as relaxed to drive as it was.

Edit to add: Recently replacing the Michelin XPC tyres that were on it with some Maxxis ATs has improved things.

It may turn out to be a bigger job than i thought, did you have to extend the brake lines, if i have to do this extra stuff, (brake lines etc.) i might end up going higher and doing a diff ratio change and putting bigger tires, swaybar disconnects and a 3" + lift and do it properly along with cranked radious rods and dislocation cones, but that will end up big, maybe i'll just drive it like it is until the HSC is over and i can invest some time, looks like i might get some 30mm spacers for the time being and do a proper job on it later on. I'll stew it over in my mind, see what i come up with, mum may be getting a new car soon, so i might end up with a td5 manual Discovery anyway and then turn this into a comp toy type of thing, but i'll see how the cookie crumbles, it is a DD for now, and i am really happy with how it handles, just be nice if it didnt hit the bump stops as often when i've got 7 people in it.

    Thanks

    Hi Will,
Had Ironman suspension on mt old Pajero & could not fault. Fitted them to '96 Tdi & after 2 sets of rear springs I replaced all the springs with a set from a mates Rangie, (brand unknown) no problems since.

I found my Ironman springs sagged after a short time. I put in 30mm spacers to bring it's hight back up. They ride nicely and do the job but better kits out there. I'm not using there shocks though. A lot of people talk to Suspension Stuff for there kits and have been happy with the results.

As for the break lines you should be ok with a 2" lift. On the rear you can just move the bracket down a bit. I have given it hell and no problems. When you get some extra cash it couldn't hurt though.
    Cheers, David.
