Nicho, the issue with the 200tdi is that heads are no longer available.
If you cook her and bannana the head then it will be a good thing that you are happy to play with engines as you will most likely be replacing it with something else!

And rangieman, I cant believe that I am the only one who has seen buttery disco1 floor pans cracked and bent like cheese. Get under any '95 and I would be surprised if the floorpan to chassis mounts are true. But its not a show stopper, weld, plate and move on.

So that's when you go for the Isuzu engine or something else huh. I'm a little careful when it comes to overheating an engine though, I'd sooner walk than boil it. And yes I'm one of those drivers that keeps one eye on the gauges and one eye on the road.
A good maintinence schedule and regular checks of water levels hoses and belts and keeping an eye on the spot where you park your rig will give you an early warning, but in saying that is there some underlying problems that I should be aware of on the 200tdi so I can keep an eye on them. This is my first turbo diesel that I'm willing to work on. I put new glow plugs in it today and removed and inspected the injectors which I will be replacing asap. A full service (all fluids and filters, even though the previous owner said it was just done how do i know he is telling the truth)coming up this Sunday along with a solid check over the whole car. I gave it a cut and polish today and it's looking even better than before. I'm really liking the way the 2dr looks and can't wait to see the stance when I put my mod parts on. But I'm not rushing to it I can wait and the boss is making sure of it.

Well i have a 96 and it gets used as it should and funny enough no cracks:p , Ive seen nicho,s and it was due to the body lift nothing else :cool:

Fit a low coolant alarm, should be first mod for all tdi owners, I know a dude with an unopened 200tdi, done about 650k now

Rangieman, one day have a real close look at every body to chassis mount (pressure wash off the mud) - I will be amazed if you have no cracks in the folded floor pan.

One other thing Nicho, the new disco will more than likely have 10spline half shafts. So to swap your rims/tyres it may be safest to swap out both whole axle assemblies.
The front radius arms "may" be a different dimension but youll work that out Im sure.

And totally agreed with Matt, get a water level alarm. A tdi will overheat and boil irrespective of close monitoring of the gauges! Having said that the 200tdi keep their heads on and gaskets together much better than 300tdi.

I have full intentions of transferring over my full front and rear axle assemblies to save time and effort removing axles and diffs and rebuilding swivel hubs etc. Since my old ones are all fully rebuilt and ready for abuse.

You say the front radius arms may be a different size can anyone confirm this for me please, if they are it may change my whole idea of what I'm going to do. I don't have the cash to go and buy all these parts again.

Where do I get a low water alarm and how hard are they to install??

And does anyone know a good diesel mech near Pakenham who can give my tdi a tune??

For a low water alarm for a tdi - click on the 'shop' icon above. I should have had one in my old tdi :mad:. That's all you need. I put a mad mad ems in my D2 to monitor boost, battery, EGT, low water, Coolant temp, auto temp etc and to be honest - it's a bit of an overkill.

A 300TDI head can be fitted (with mods) so thats probably why you cant buy 200 heads.

Warragul Diesel have a realy good reputation for their diesel tunes , Only a half hour to the east from you , The coolant alarm replaces the filler plug on your radiator , Easy to wire up + and a - is all that is needed , The engine saver coolant alarm is a great bit of gear and dave is always up for a yap (warning) dont mention m/bikes you wont get off the ph :cool:

I have fitted one of his kits to all my diesels over the years normaly a half hour job and the cost is alot less than a new motor or head , Also i have heard about fitting 300tdi heads to a 200tdi dont know how true it is:cool: might pay to do a search
