This was just discussed at length a week ago into the "300Tdi death by oil thread".

Having gone though this myself I ended up simply moving the whole car on.

The location of the bowls in the pistons, and the angle of the injectors are different, as are the injectors themselves. You cannot remove a 200Tdi piston in situ as the ladder frame prevents removal of the big end caps.

It becomes more a question of is it worth pulling your 200Tdi engine out completely to fit 300Tdi pistons, head, injectors, rocker gear etc...

(addendum: and my frank answer to that is of course not, if its a Disco anyway, because the cost of doing all that gets you a much newer car with a quieter engine, a non-feral dash with glove box, auto transmission, ABS, airbags etc...)

Believe it or not some people don't need all that crap. If I wanted airbags and abs I would have waited and purchased a 97 98 disco but I don't.

I actually like the layout of the dash and the area between the instrument cluster and grab bar gives me plenty of room to fabricate somewhere to put my gadgets without chopping into a newer dash.
The simplicity and lack of electronics is my aim so I don't need to worry about it when I'm doing major river crossings etc which were a concern in my 97 v8 even with the big lift etc.

Less to break less to fix less to leave me stranded.

Glove boxes are just somewhere to put a pile of crap that shouldn't be in the car anyway.

This 93 is a perfect blank canvas for a future masterpiece even if there is haters of the 200tdi for what ever reason, while its still going fine and being maintained I'm sure I'll get another 200,000 out of it. I know it's no V8 and it never will have that power but you know what I've driven it to work the last 2 days to feel out any problems and it's an easy stress free cruise, it keeps up with traffic without having to thrash it and even my wife said today that it feels like I'm driving it gently. Economy, torque, comfort. I'm 1 happy camper

Sorry, to be honest I hadn't read the rest of the thread, didn't realise you'd picked another D1 up, was going by your signature.

My 200 Disco was perfectly reliable and a great car, the only point I'm trying to make it that if the head goes, there isn't really a viable solution that makes economic sense. That was what pushed me towards a later model in the end.

No drama mate. I had thought long and hard about what to replace dozer with and to be honest i even thought of just making it into a comp truck and not touring at all, If I could afford a 300tdi without air and abs I would have but my budget is tight after all the $$$ I spent on dozer. It was hard enough to convince the wife that I "had" to get a replacement asap let alone tell her I had to spend 5k+ after spending a gazillion on dozer hence my selection, and so far all checks I have done on it are good so fingers crossed it will last a while. Lessons learned never again all suspension lift this time.

I changed to the all terrains on steel rims that he gave me with the car and on measuring up (with a tape measure) the road tyres it was running were 31's and the all terrains are 29's. It takes off a lot better with the all terrains. I'm loving the economy too done 200kms and just about to hit 3/4 tank normally it would be over 1/2 tank. Rangieman I'll check out ur mate in Warragul next week or week after and get it fine tuned ( do you have a number or is he in the book, also where can I get one of those low water warning systems I want one asap) had read up on tweaks it don't think I'll even bother, it's not a rocket ship And I never want it to be I'm happy cruising like an old grandpa enjoying the reduced fuel bill.

Oh and after the work yesterday new glow plugs and just a basic wash of the injectors the black cloud that followed me home from picking it up has almost gone (1 happy camper here).

Thanks for all the comments and info I'm getting into this diesel thing now reading all the manuals I can get and so many forum entries just trying to understand how and why with the engines. I've always been a petrol man and honestly diesel has scared me but I now realize its not that complicated and look forward to playing with it some more, he'll I might even do a rebuild on it in the not to distant future just to make sure it's gonna last the kms I plan to do with it, no use heading north and killing it on the way I'd sooner know now that later when I have spent all my hard earned again because I'm sure if I have to start again I just won't bother.
Well that's it for today tomorrow is another day and there is a gearbox mount waiting to be replaced. And a heap of oils and filters in the garage with a tdi waiting for them

Sorry if i came across as mister negative.
Maybe if your gonna run your v8 axles keep an eye out for a defender 1.4 transfer case.
Will cope betterer with the 35s and means you wont need to regear the diffs.

The issue with the front radius arms is the width of the front two bushes. Since you are gonna change arms and axles it wont be a drama. Does your v8 run dual front brake circuits? If not the easiest thing to do will be to swap booster and master from v8 to 200 tdi when you change over the axles.

I don't take it as negative until you go over board, honesty mate is the key what I've been told from everyone so far are good and bad points which gives me things to look out for and thats why i posted about it, you never want just the good points do you.
My V8 has high tough axles county cv's and front and rear lockers with 4.75 gearing pegged pinions. Do you think this gearing will be too high for the 200 or will I need 4.11's to keep the revs down.
The V8 has abs but only single circuits so it should be a direct swap aside from blocking the abs sensor, but I'm sure I can take that piece out of the tdi's housing if not I'll work something out.

Any info good bad or worse ill take on board, I'm new to diesels and this seems so foreign to me but I'm learning more every day.

Here's one to ponder when it comes to tyre sizes.
Last night I removed the alloys with road tyres measuring a measly 205/75/16 and replaced them with factory steel wheels with all terrains measuring 225/75/16.
The road tyres when measured top to bottom were 31" but the all terrains were 29".
But when i put the measurements into a tyre calculator to get the exact sizes it showed them to be 28" and 29" respectively. There is a noticeable size difference in the overall diameter between the 2 tyres
I then measured my wife's 31/10.5/15 Mickey thomson mtzs on her jeep and got a figure of 29 1/2 but the side wall states 31/10.5/15

How the heck do they work out the sizes it's not making any sense to me right now

regardless of what is written on the side wall the only 100% accurate way to determine the size is to actually measure it

The overall diameter of an inflated tyre is not the same as the rolling diameter. The length of the steel belt remains nearly the same under changing load/pressure, so the tread contact patch stays parallel to the steel belts. That is why a bald tyre does similar revs/km as a new one. Chalk mark the tyre and the ground, rotate one full turn under load, measure this length by tape measure, divide by pi to get rolling diameter.

Looks like a good pickup mate, enjoy the transition and transfer of parts. The best thing is you can make it what you want it to be from scratch.
