    What to do

    Ok here's my dilemma,
After buying my disco and deciding on what to modify on it I got a little bit carried away and turned it from a tourer build to a full on weekend warrior which is not what I really wanted but I still enjoy it, but after fitting an inferior body lift i have done some substantial damage to the chassis and rear door area of my beloved disco so Do I do the following

1 buy another disco and rewrite my wrongs ( turbo diesel instead of v8 and a complete body lift)

2 or do I chop this one down and make it a comp truck and buy a defender with basic mods for touring??

I love the comfort of the disco but the overall size and ability of a defender make it a perfect choice for a tourer to tackle the Cape and the Kimberly with the missus and the dogs.

Any feedback would e very helpful
    Cheers
    Nicho

Have you spoken to someone about getting the body mount welded back on?
It'd not ideal but plenty of people weld and mod chassis these days.

Adams ute is still for sale isn't it?!?!

    Bugger

Option one - get a cheap 92 / 4 petrol for a grand or less and swap everything over and do the lift properly (or a newer one)

Option 2 how much fun are you going to have with a dedicated toy and the defa is ok as a daily drive but your right it isn't as good as a disco, but you are also right that a defa is much better as a tourer due to larger volume

If I had the $$ I would go for option 2

P.S. the defa can trailer the toy as well if you go all out and it is no longer registerable

I think you may have answered your question. There is nothing like travelling 1000's of kms and being comfortable at the end of the day when touring.

It look's to me like you have spent thousands on your current car, money that you can never get back, It would be a shame to just write all your work off so quickly for parts ( I'm assuming it cannot be repaired?).

I think a good Tdi and all the best bits from your current ride would be the way to go. IMO unless you plan on doing a huge long term trip, you could always buy a good trailer.

Mind you, the above doesn't matter if you really just wanted a good excuse to build a comp truck!!?!!
    Good Luck!!

Keep the disco mate, you've gone too far to go back now. I would love a defender for the same reasons but i do love my disco and what little luxuries it has is enough for me plus there isnt that much extra room to make the change worthwhile IMHO taking into account what you have already spent on the disco. Shove in a 4bd1t and msa 5sd if fuel consumption is the major factor.

On discussions with the good wife I'm going to look for a suitable replacement and put in a white tiger body lift as money allows and transfer all my good bits across. I did a repair and plated the mounts but there is too much twist and upward movement on the rear of the old body for it to be useful so i have to find a doner ( dont think black river track helped me in keeping it straight). An offroad camping trailer is the solution to the space factor. And I think if I wait long enough I will find a suitable TDI to fill the shoes of the dozer. In the mean time the season is still open and it's still useable so I'll make the most of it and retire it after the tracks close this year.
Did the 2 doors ever come out in TDI? Or what's better TD 200 or the 300? Not sure on diesels and I'll be entering into unfamiliar territory when I get one so it's time to learn all over again

Thanks for your words of encouragement I was a bit lost and yes I have thrown a bucket load of cash into the dozer so I'd love to transfer the gear and keep using it if I can. Maybe even do the cape in a year or 2

2DR TDI's are rare and 2drs stopped about 95 i think, 200tdi's are good but that will be pre 94 - 300tdi's are later and a bit more refined.

I found a 2 dr tdi in Darwin but I can't get it yet lol. I bet when I'm looking I don't ever see another one. As long as I get a TD and it's pre abs and airbags I'll be happy. Anyone with one who is thinking about selling in say 6 months let me know, I'd sooner have a known car than a parts unknown if you know what i mean. Ooh TD5 are they totally different or just the motor and are they any better overall than a td200/300??

I assume you are talking about a 2000 model td5 series 2 disco? If so, DON'T DO IT!!! I sold my 00 TD5 last year and it seemed to me the early ones are prone to problems. Now I'm sure I will get scolded for those words but IMHO it's true. I had heaps of problems and you only have to look at the other section of the forum (disco2, tech section) to see my point.

They have too many electrics running silly little things that fail after what is now ten years. Plus close to nothing will change over from your old car.

I now have a Tdi 300 which doesn't even have an air flow meter. IMO wait for the perfect Tdi.

yes, tdi es motor done 120kk, auto done 50kk blah blah, need to keep it until my LSE is on the road. It's wifeys car, but she's ordering a new car next week i think, so it becomes the 2nd car for now. Oh its an SRS model (easy to fix get rid of that though)
