Just rebuilding after cam belt replacement and discovered that my belt aircon to crankshaft run just rubs the viscous fan pulley. Probably not a big issue as the viscous fan should be running at crank shaft revs. However I am not really comfortable with this. Manual shows to check belt tension by measuring deflection right where belt touches pulley. Not an ideal situation. Probably could do a 'pull test' for deflection. The other solution might be to remove (cut off) the inter pulley segment on the viscous fan pulley. But this all seems rather drastic. Has anyone else experieced this situation? Does it even matter?
I have attached a picture of what it looks like.

i the fan pulley the same shape as the belt or the same speed.as long as its not wearing the belt.often losse pulleys are used to stop the belt flapping.
are we taking about a denso compressor?
is it on its side.
lots of aftermarketdenso compressors with different width mounts and pulleys-maybe raise the compressor a little.

for starters your belt path is incorrect
the belt should sit in the gooves on the VC fan pully if the belt is showing wear that is attributable to running on this pully (the VC pully groves will have polishing on them) then either the pully itself is no longer true (not tightened on correctly) or the shafts bearings are dying. Both can be caused by the fan not running in balance for prolonged periods.

I maybe should have been more specfic - its a 200 TDI. However if I flip the idler and tensoner pullies, route the belt to the diagram, then maybe I can call it a 300 TDI ;-} Checked all the bearings etc when stripped down. It's the long run beween the crank shaft pulley and aircon pulley. There are no adjustments that allow me to provide a gap between the belt and VC pulley. Just doesn't seem right - but that's the way it has always been since belt service 10 yrs ago by LR Service Centre. Well the belts are on and motor is running. I'll watch and see what happens. Yeep its a Denso Aircon. Tried jacking it up last night. After your suggestion went and jacked it some more tonight to see how far I would need to go. I'd compromise the bolts thread engagement. Need longer bolts. However I decided to put it all back the way it came off and I'll keep an eye on it. I think your comment on the 'flap' may have some merit. Motor is now running again so I will do final checks tomorrow and then road test it. Next time I find another Disco with same configuration I'll have a good long look. OK Disco is nearly back on the road so RR can come off the road and go back in the barn. That'll save me some dollars in fuel costs. Thanks for your input. Appreciated.
