timing belt change 1996 disco 1

Has anyone paid for a timing belt change recently at a garage that is? I just got a verbal quote of $900.00. How can they justify this when i've seen the full kit advertised on ebay for $225.00 and I have read of members saying they can complete the job in 3 hours.Thats $675.00 for labor.

it depends on whats included in the works...

if you get just the belt changed and no other service work (valve adjustments, cooling system flush, intercooler clean out, oil /filter change) then that may be exxy if it only takes 3 hours.... if it blows out because the bolts fight, or the crank nuts siezed in or or or then it can wind up being not too bad if its a fixed quote.

I bet that your parts price for the job with them doing it will be nearer $400 I'd ask them to do a detailed quote on what they actually will be doing, what their quoted hours are and what the parts are worth.

Guess you are talking 200TDI... Just replaced mine. Parts - new belt, new idler, new tensioner, gasket + I had an air filter and oil filter = $295 Kiwi Dollars. Think the belt was $80 and idler and tensioner $65 each. Sorry - can't find paper work - Filing system not working!!! In anycase shop should be able to do it 3 hours - BUT as Dave says if every thing goes OK. Took me longer - first time and I made up some tooling on the way through. I'd do it 3 next time - but only if there were no issues. If you do it yourself then you will need some big tooling ie 3/4 drive for the crank shaft bolt and probably a slimed down 32mm spanner for the VC pulley. Cheers

    they quote you 900.
If you bite and all goes well its beer and skittles.
If the crank bolt has been welded on, the timing case is cracked and the fan bearing is hanging on for dear life well they might break even.

If you want a fair quote from a professional call JustinC. in hobart so you know your not being robbed.

If you want it done cheap go to 'Whoflungdung Mechanical' and hope that they get it right.

You think that they are buying parts off eBay and onselling them with no margin?

Are they changing all the oil seals, etc?
