The "L" shaped probe is longer, so goes nearer to the gas path through the manifold. The short probe would suit mounting on a different style of manifold where you could be sure the tip was in the gas flow. The mounting is also better IMO.
As for fitting, I usually mount them under the dash switch pod, the one with the cruise switch in it. A cable tie passed through two 6mm holes drilled under the switch pod will secure it. I don't do fancy, I do "it works" .![]()
Am l right in that it can be wired thru a relay to activate the aircon electric fan. Do you think it would make any real difference, worth the effort?
I have just purchased one of these. A couple of questions please...
How far should I screw the mounting piece into the blanking plate?
Should I cover the cable from the sensor?
And finally... The hole through the fire wall on the drivers side is rather full! Is there some where else I can run cable and stuff through to the dash area?
Thanks in advance.
Did you tap the blanking plate with a thread, or just drill a hole? The ideal is to tap a thread...or that's what I did at least.
If you mean the silver mesh kind of cable, then I don't think it is necessary. I just carefully cable tied mine around the engine bay to the firewall hole. Be careful not to crush the cable though. It is somewhat fragile...
I'm willing to bet with a bit of persistance you can fit it.Mine was difficult as well, but be careful and keep at it and I bet you can fit it through...
I'd at least cover the sensor cable with split corrugated where other wiring is present, as its bare metal makes a pretty sparkly effect when contacted by a loose live wire.
Yes the hole has been tapped. It is just that the fitting seems to protrude a long way! Guess it will all come clear when I fit it this weekend.
All I can say is look at the photo bee_utey posted on the previous page. Mine looks like that as well.
Really what you're aiming for is to have the tip of the probe in the centre of the exhaust tube and definitely should NOT be touching any sides. Get it as close as you can by estimation and you're good.
Well I hooked the thing up on the weekend and it works like a dream. It's fascinating to see the temperature fluctuations and how lifting the foot even a fraction can have such a major impact on the temp..
One problem however! Well other than the fact I had to bend the probe in order to keep it from touching the sides of the space....
The real problem is to do with the length of the cable. Wanted to mount the unit In the space filled by the blank switches below the clock. Only problem is the cables too short by about 6 inches!
Questions are .. Is there another way through the bulk head other than the grommet just above the accelerator ?
.... Can I attach extension to lengthen the cable?
