I would still be guessing heater core, but I'm no expert...
I have a coolant leak at the rear of the engine area. The hoses to the under-dash heater look fine (my first thought). What could be causing leaking at the rear of the engine ? The vehicle still runs well.

Check the two hoses that run from the engine into the heater core lines that stick out through the bulkhead. They run to the top of the engine between the valve cover and manifold - you will need to remove the sound deadening cover to expose this if you have one. Check the hoses for rubbing and tightness. Heater hoses are easily forgotten and often the cause of coolant loss.
Make sure of where the coolant is coming from - if it's not the heater hose connections then the head gasket is on it's way out.
There's also a welsch plug in the back of the head, I've had one of those let go a long time ago.
Heater Hoses. Check to see if they feel very soft and almost vulcanized. I was losing coolant somewhere but coudn't find the leak until I overheated and steam was coming from the engine bay. guess what, the bloody heater hose split a fraction. couldn't find it when water/engine was cold/cooler. grab each hose and squeeze, bend move every which way you might be surprised.
Cheers
