    Disco 1991

    Hi all

New to the forum & new to owning a Disco!

Just bought a disco 1991 & there are a couple of problems which need addressing.

The steering is very slack & the outside edge of my tyres are wearing so I assume these issues are connected in some way - any common problems / ideas?

Air con - is blowing cold air but not blowing very hard - any ideas?

Also the previous owner has installed a new CD player & put stereo speakers (do not know why) in the boot! the stereo speakers do not work so any advice on how to connect the original speakers again?

Many thanks - (I did try to use the search engine!)

    Dean

    Welcome.

You can get most answers from the forum, however it is sometimes necessary to refer to a workshop manual. A haynes book is allright, but the proper workshop manual is better. Fortunately, if you look in the 'shop' section ( Top toolbar a little to the right from center) there are WSM on disc for sale cheap - you need the 'preupdate' version ( Not RAVE, which is for the next model -post 94).

It operates like a big PDF document -easy to use.

With it, you can adjust the steering box, align your wheels, chase down why the blower motor isn't working too well, and get the speakers working.

    In the meantime
How to adjust the steering play on a Land Rover - The Land Rover Blog
( Don't forget to check the two uni joints in the steering shaft)
    and

set the wheel alignment to zero - ie same distance point to point at the front and the rear of the front wheels. ( the adjusting collar winds the track rod in and out).

Think about giving the blower switch a clean and tidy up - it could be that it's not making the contact on the last position (high)

As to the radio- the disco has standard a 4 speaker system: The factory loom terminates behind the radio in what is called an 'Euro ISO' plug, and then an adaptor harnesses are used for different radios in different countries. With any luck the previous owner has butchered the adaptor harness and not the main wiring. ie when you take the current radio out, if you follow the wiring there should be a plug/socket setup in the loom. (AERPRO make adaptor harnesses with an Euro iso end for most radios- available in most places.) If it's a big mess, you'll need the WSM on disc to trace the wiring.

    Hi Dean

    Welcome aboard to the forum.

Get a helper and check for loose parts.
With your helper, have them to move the steering wheel, rocking it gently from side to side.
Look for any parts in the steering that have slack in them, they will need replacing before you can cure your tyre wear.

The site How to adjust the steering play on a Land Rover - The Land Rover Blog is WRONG.
First jack both front wheels clear of the ground, adjust in the straight ahead position, small amounts at a time till play in steering wheel is to factory specs or suitable to you (there should a little play). When set, rotate steering wheel from lock to lock and feel for any notchy sections or tightening, if so back off till it turns both ways smoothly. If you can't get it to turn without notchiness or tight spots you will need to replace or rebuild the steering box, Regards Frank.
