    Coolant loss

Hi, I am losing coolant and dont know where its going , I go for a drive for 1/2an hour or so , check the level in the exspantion box and it will have droped about 25mm or so, I have done a carbon monoxside test that was OK (did not turn yellow) no water on the carpets , no leeks from the hoses , no white smoke when driving , so I am at a loss as to where its going , car drives Ok for a 300tdi.

    Have you checked the oil?

Yes , I have checked the oil on the filling cap and dip stick , both show no signs of water, oil level looks good too.

If the coolant level is dropping you have a leak. Either internal or external.
If internal then water is going into the sump or out the exhaust pipe.
External it is dripping off somewhere.

Given that you can't see an external leak, my guess would be the water is going out the exhaust, ie a blown head gasket.

I was under the impression that chemical head checks as you have done don't work well with diesel engines.

my 300tdi coolant level always sit about 25mm below the coolant level mark. doesn't ever go lower, never over heats, never uses any other fluids,
I fill the coolant up to the proper level, drive around and it seems to level itself out 25mm below the mark. others on this forum have the same experiance from what I have read. If it isnt going down any further I wouldnt worry about it. I was for a while then realised it was settling at this hieght, not loosing any more.
