    30% or 49% reduction gears

    G'day All,

    Last year I went out with the lads in the hills out the back of Lake Lyell, near Lithgow, NSW. My Disco is a diesel/auto combination, which is a great combination, but one of the downsides is going down steep slopes. I found myself on the brake pedal more than I liked, & yes I was in low range, 1st gear.

    I have ordered a 2 inch lift kit from MR Automotive in Brisbane, along with some 265/75 R16 Goodyear MT/R tyres. MR Automotive told me that they sell 30% or 49% transfer case reduction gears. 30% gears for $1700, & 49% gears for $1870. I was thinking about 49% gears as they are only $170 more. However, for each reduction in gearing will correspond to an increase in engine revs. My fear is that if I go for 49% reduction gears, my little 300 Tdi will scream it's head off.

    Surely some of you lot would have had some experiences with transfer case reduction gears. I would like to know what your experiences are before I lash out with my hard earned.

    I have the 49% gears, but yet to reassemble the t-case.

    49% gives you a good spread of gears, but may mean you have to use high range when you would previously have used 4/5 low.

    The only concern for me is reversing in soft sand. There are times when reverse high is too tall, and reverse low is just right. But a 49% lower reverse low may dig in.

    From what I have seen..... and don't have!

    auto... if you really want them then 30%
    manual... both are a winner, but 49%
