84 Holden Blue 308 Engine into my Disco 1

I have an 84 Holden Statesman with a Blue V8 308 / 5 Litre engine in good working order, 200K and I really would like to put this into my Series 1 Disco which has a 3.5 V8.

Is this possible ? Has anyone done it successfully ? Can I get an adapter plate ? I realise I will have to change the engine mounts.

What I really want to know is will it fit without too much cutting.

    Cheers ......... Steve

It will fit with simple adaptor plates.

It will probably also chew up and spit out your gearbox (either manual or auto) and your axles.

Will the 84 engine meet ADR/pollution requirements that were in place in 91-93 when the Disco as made?

The engineering certification process will have to take that into account.

AFAIK all cars after 1976 have an ADR classification, and it is illegal to fit an engine from a car of an earlier year or ADR classification. That is why it is legal to fit a P76 to a 76RRC but none later, though some are done on the basis of "what the eye doesn't see "

Seeing you will need an engineer's approval for the conversion, I doubt one would sign off unless the engine were of the same year or later than the Disco1 with all pollution gear from the donor vehicle and the factory ECU from the donor..

it would have to be a VN or later EFI engine-or at worst a VL ULP 304 carby/Black 4.9.

blue 308 is carby probably ADR 27B or C and if it was from outside NSW/VIC it might only be ADR27 with only evaporative emission gear and heated air cleaner/manifold.
    .
at 200Km it be lucky to pass any emision level.carbon canister etc is much the same.my disco 1 has no catalist but im told they still meet the emision standards.

when i put a car through engineers report they used the rule of any ULP engine in any ULP vehicle conversion.they also tested my car telling me my 1986 skyline engine cleared for aproval to use up to 2002 build spec after telling me it fitted any ulp car.

The conversion has been done hundreds of times before .Most Blues came out of the Statesmans of that era .84 was the year they change back from a Turbo/chev pattern to a Trimatic pattern . make sure you know what pattern your block is before getting an Adapter. The blue was the lowestHPmost polluted engine that a 308 ever came in , the barely made 150hp . Most use the EFI block ,89 onwards ,so be careful each has its own mounting arrangement/exhaust/cam/inlet manifold.

You can usually get around the pollution problem by running straight gas (ie no petrol tank).
