    New discover owner

First off im 17 and have a deal with my parents that I can use about 6k to buy a car.

After taking a liking to land rovers in car yards I started to do research and I came across this site. Reading all you guys talk has made me like them even more.

I was originally searching for a FL td4 but had absolutely no luck, so now have turned to a diesel Discovery (TDI), and have found a few suitable and possible options.

My questions are what should I expect? What do I need to know? What to be wary of? etc

PS - I'm talking about discos from 95-00

not that expensive to maintain if you dont smash them to hard off road, do to many upgrades and service then often...

expects.. I'd get a coolant level alarm or a head temperature probe put in.. could save you loads..

comon rust sports.. floors under carpet, alpine windows..

The only offroading I would do would only be baby stuff so that's all good.
The only upgrades I would do would be to keep it going.
How often do they need servicing? How much do services cost rougly?

Ok could I do the coolant alarm or temp probe myself or does a mechanic have to do it? (I'm not really a car expert but i'm learning). If it could save me loads I guess it's worth it.

Would rust affect the overall performance/driveability of the car?

    Thanks for the info

    Hi rabbitohs123
Personally I find the Tdi easy enough to work on, if you are looking for a relatively no nonsense economical 4 X 4 you are pretty well on the money. Land Rover have I suppose what you would call a cult following. This forum is excellent to guide you on your merry way. Expect oil leaks especially around the transfer case area, obviously the less the better. Try and find one with some sort of service history, or an enthusiast.
Me I service, change engine oil every 5000 klms, depends on yourself and how keen you are. Keep the oil levels right, make sure all the hoses are in good nick, especially the heater ones. Head sensor as mentioned is a damn good idea, easy enough to fit yourself, easy instructions.
Try and find one with some half decent tyres these are expensive on any 4X4. When you take it for a drive listen for anything that sounds expensive in the running gear, make sure you try the four wheel drive system when you take it for a drive, don't turn on bitumen with 4 wheel drive engaged.
As mentioned check for rust, front fire wall around the guards, floors and the b post at the bottom. Get as many extras as you can, bull bar, spotties radio etc.
You'll soon grow out of the baby stuff when it isn't a challenge and you find out how good LR's really are. Speeding fines won't be an issue if you go with the Tdi, the good part is you won't be on first name terms with the people at the local servo.
Oh and finally, don't act surprised if the roof lining is hanging down. All the very best on your quest, I'm sure you will find something out there that suits your needs and your wallet.

ENGINE GUARDIAN EG-2 WATCHDOG TEMP SENSOR GAUGE & ALARM | eBay

i have that alarm, but if you look through ebay hard enough you'll find it for about 110, I paid 110 for it with some searching... and its so easy to fit, you take off a screw on the head and attach the probe put the screw back in.. conect the wires.. I piggy backed the power source of the sensor to my cd player (anoying when I turn my cd player off) took me about an hour.. very simple really

oil will cost you about $50.. filters about 20 for air and oil..

if you look at ebay and uk websites you'll find parts for repairs far cheaper than you'll ever find in australia..

    good luck

Just checked with the seller and he does have service history so good news. I've already started shopping around for the temp sensors, i'm trying to find one with instructions. My dad will check the engine when test driving he's bought a used 4wd before so he can handle that. When i looked at one in a car yard the roof lining was hanging but nothing extreme.

Everything sounds good and managable so far, thank you
