I was thinking about doing the conversion, but had thought it would be a little costly (we are in the middle of buying a house) so I have already ordered a replacement rubber donut!
I didn't think the conversion was that cheap
otherwise I would have done it.... I paid $80 for the donut
....
Do you have any wisdom on the repair I am proposing above?

make sure you put it in right.. and dont go offroad until you can afford to repair it again..
the conversion is rather easy... people have websites all over educating on it..
if you troll these forums adn gumtree and ebay and whatever else you may have in the sunny coast (looking for wrecks or wreckers) you should be able to pick up the parts cheaper than you paid for that donut..
the hardest part of the confusion is removing the stupid bolt that holds the pinion shaft in.. you need a slide hammer or something that works like one... I used a landcruiser diff with a bolt going through..
