the 300tdi does not normally have any sort of idle up mechanism. the change in your idle speed could be due to a developing problem or fault, such as extra drag from compressor, valve clearence, pump delivery, air supply, timing belt or worn keyways and many more.

My car hunts a little bit at idle (sometimes), always just put it down to the age and km's on the motor, never worried me as the diesel tractors hunt a bit and this didn't do anything worse, still goes alright, i just assume the idel is a bit low. Does it whether AC is on or off, BTW my turbo is wound up a bit, if that makes a difference

    Cheers

mine does this as well and only with the 'air' on. it has happened only since i had the pump reco because of a leak in the body of the pump. it also blows a little smoke now and then since then as well.
i would take it back to the repairers but i cannot reliably replicate the issues and i dont know how good the new owner of 'highway diesels' is on land rovers

It occured to me that i never fitted a new air filter after i drowned it, just stuck it back in after it was dry, which means its probably gone like concrete, maybe this is why i'm getting smoke and crap economy and also the hunting. I'll have a look see what happens

Changed the air filter from a Cooper filter to a Ryco today (thats what Repco had i wanted Cooper, but too lazy to drive to the Landy Place), the old one was full of crap, new one in and guess what, no hunt, smoother acceleration, more power, no smoke, better mileage AND NO HUNT !!!! Yippee
