Question Land Rover Servicing and Maintenance Ongoing

Desperately seeking someone to service and maintain Land Rover Disco, 1994 300tdi ... she's a bit sad at the mo', in need of tlc and I just can't seem to find anyone reliable and affordable within cooee ... got badly burned by a 'local' mechanic recommended by the RACQ; found a guy in Lismore (NSW) but we're back in Queensland now (Kooralbyn).

Any advice would be hugely appreciated as I'm completely useless when it comes to mechanics, but I love my Landy! She's my third or fourth one now; wrapped one around a tree ... mmm (ancient history). But she's my first Disco and I'd love to keep her going ... nearly all new panel work about 4 years ago, hail damage (she looked like a giant squared off golf ball); new head gasket about the same time ... she needs attention in a lot of areas but she keeps on going, and, if diesel was cheaper, she'd be saving me moolah ... good on the juice!

Okay, enough waffle ... I've attached a pic, even though my Disco isn't really anything special; aside from being part of our 'home' for the past two years or so ...

    Cheers!

Thanks for your reply, DIY is beyond me, physically, and I'm in no way mechanically minded (my hubby unfortunately isn't familiar with diesel engines at all and could do requisite work required but doesn't know where to start) ... it seems as though there are no Land Rover mechanics within cooee either ... mmm, don't know what to do about that but, the next question would be about my battery.

Been having trouble on and off with not starting, one RACQ guy says it's the battery, another it's the alternator (but that was checked and seems fine!); can anyone recommend the best, 1000cca battery (current one is only 520cca but has been in the vehicle for 3 years now) that will fit in a '94 Disco? The RACQ quoted member price of $250+ for a 'suitable' battery ...

We put a new battery in a d1 about 3 weeks ago lot less than $250 will look and get the number for you it is about 680cca. A 1000cca battery is gona cost alot, as for serviceing talk to dave (blknight.aus) he is a mech and can show your hubby how to service it its not too hard and a heap cheaper than going to a garage cant look at the car untill mon to get the battery number

you only need 500CCA for a TDI.

almost any N60 profile battery will do the job nicely and an N70 can be squeezed in.

Just tell your hubby that he starts with a quick message to me to sort out a time to do the work then Bring the hubby up with you along with any tools you have and I'll get him sorted for basic 10K Km service work. If I can schedule you for a saturday morning theres 4 choices of places for getting any tools you might be short of at good prices and I'll get you your filters at my price from my supplier so you'll just need to supply your own oil.

The battery can be sourced locally to here from the same places Id get my tools from OR you can do an online purchase, have it delivered here and lets say your current budget for the battery is $250 with the change from the purchase of the battery I can probably put the old battery in place on the other side of the engine bay wired up as a basic dual battery system. (I reccomend that if you use it regularly that you grabe one of drivesafes SC80's or better)

    Update!

The best we can do for a battery out this way is from Battery World at around $169 (online price), dunno what it will be in-store but we'll find out on Wednesday (had a 'discussion' with the RACQ on their 'price-gouging' and the dude we'd just got out via roadside assistance was none too happy ... he insists [still] that the current battery in our vehicle was not supplied by the RACQ, when it was and that their batteries are good quality hence the price difference)!

Still am not in any way mobile enough to be travelling across country for maintenance purposes, however, it won't be forever - one can only hope (and we'll get around to tooling up and sorting out DIY servicing, hopefully this side of Chirstmas)!

I have another query for all you Disco owners in the know regarding tyres.

We need at least four, preferably five, for our vehicle ('94 Series 1 Disco Tdi) but the current tyres are Range Rover ones!

There was a tyre mob who tried to hook us up with some trade ins they were getting, that fell through ... the Range Rover 'highway' tyres are 235/70R16 and we'd be happy to be able to get 'second-hand' highway tyres (I'm not up to off-roading as such any more so we've no real need of overly knobby ones).

We got quotes for new tyres (Bearepaires quoted sale price of $279.00 (RRP $320.00) per for 225/75R16 as apparently the current tyres we have fitted are not common - we were hoping to come out of it under a grand!? Another mob quoted us on 225/75R16 tyres, $165 each, fitted to our vehicle (I don't recall the brand, it was not one I'd heard of if I recall).

    I'd appreciate any/all assistance/advice! Thanks so much,

    Anne Marie

PS We need tyres for a caravan we have too, if anyone knows of any (three of 185/75R14 for which we were quoted $77 each new).

as a rule I dont advise spending less than $200 a corner on tyres for non series landies, generally you wont generally get good value out of them

Ive got a pair of BFG AT's look alikes on SWMBO's disco ATM that are coming off as they are not identical to my other wheels or spare they've got maybe 40% left on them and once they're off you're welcome to them.

Theres a couple of tyre shops around here including one cheapy that I dont normally send people to but if moneys a problem then they do the job.

Theres a local batteryworld so you can pre oder the battery to there.

I'm in darwin ATM and will be back late next month If you send me a PM we can start looking into nutting this job out for you.
