Ok, my 3.9 hates the water.

Went out yesterday to some local trax. And my disco didn't like to party in the water. She pushed through some big mud pits (I'm proud of her) but the last one was almost up to door handles and took about 3-4 mins of back n fourth before she climbed out of it. Coughing and farting for a few mins as it did each other time it felt water, BUT when I stopped and turned her off she wouldn't start, at 1st it showed signs of flat/bad connection on battery as it was strong reds until I tried to kick it over. Then reds dimmed to almost nothing. And just a faint click sound. SO tried jump start. Nothing. Clutch start was fine. But still just click if I try turn key. My question is. Would the starter motor short itself out if it is submerged in water? Cheers

The whole car was in the hole after the pic, trying to drive it out only drove it all the way in lol

Yes the water will get into the starter.
Because it's muddy the grit will build up and the contacts in the soliniod become effected.

I always recomend to leave the motor running when exiting areas like these as the heat dries things out a little.
It also avoids no resart issues particuarly if it's missing as Landy V8"s tend too with water crossings/wombat holes.

    Cheers, Kyle.

A diesel would do the same.
The starter is in a similar place and so is the alternator.
You are learning the costs of having fun in the mud.
Better check the diffs also and check that the radiator is not clogged by mud.

    Twins

My v8 does as well is there a DIY on water proofing the rover v8's. I find if I launch into holes it stalls and runs on very few cylinders but if i cruise through cautiously it is fine.

Yeah I know. This was a tame day, there was a crossing that would of swallowed most of the car. But without snorkel I chose not to. They look deep but deceiving how deep some really are. I'll be doing snorkel once I get starter sorted.

    I'm with Jazza

But the only sure fire way of keeping water out of the dizzy is with a 12v air compressor and a small air line tapped into to dizzy to keep positive pressure so water stays out
