    Heater core

Ive done a fair bit of reading on this forum and others about replacing the heater core on a S1 Disco. Mine is leaking, or maybe just the O rings. Has anyone here done the quick cut and shut method done by the Kiwi? Or is it a full weekend job.
Im going to try to organize a heater core just in cast its not the O rings. Ill try to get one and leave a deposit or one that I an return if not needed.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx
    Dave

Well I just bypassed the heater so I can still drive the car and removed some of the covers in the drivers side foot well. All looks good down there, no white stuff on the O ring clamps and the heater matrix looks in good condition as far as I can tell.
Symptoms are when I put the heater on hot/demist the windscreen fogs up and I get a strong smell of coolant. No coolant on the floor on either side. Coolant level goes down very little. I might try to pressure test the heater matrix before I go any further.

    Thanx

This won't explain the coolant smell but make sure your A/C evaporator drains are clear.
If the water backs up in the evaporator, it may explain the misting you're getting.

Thanx Scouse ill go and check them now.

    Thanx

Just checked the A/C drains and they were both blocked, well coverer with mud. Cleared the mud off and stuck a screwdriver up the hole and it was dry. Worth a look anyway, now I know where they are.

If it's an update D1, it's a day job. It's really quite easy. See http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-...orkshop-5.html

I did the cut and shut on mine. Worked really well and definitely better than taking the dash apart. Easily less than a day's work. Couple notes, when you cut the aluminium tube, do it in a section that allows you to slide the heater hose into position and apply clamps. Make sure you seat the O-rings on the heater core sections of pipe before you start with sliding the heater hose into position, really important to get those seated evenly. The core you get may not have the foam rubber in place that seals the unit and stops the rattles - mine did not, so went to Bunnings and got some self adhesive draught stopper and it worked well.
Did this replacement job two years ago and still good. Simon

I'm trying to get my heater core back in. I took the dash out but left the black box in the rover. I'm having one heck of a issue with getting the pipes on the heater core back on. Its not fun.

I haven't tried to do it this way, but I would expect that may be difficult to do without having some play in the tubes. With the dash out can you get to where the tubes are bolted on the firewall to loosen them up there a bit? Otherwise, as a suggestion, you could still cut the tubes to allow for movement if they are impossible to line up as is. You could slide on the joiner hoses and clamps on first, then tighten it all up when you have the tubes in place on the heater core.
