    advice needed-timing belt

ive got the usual leak at the front of my 300 tdi where the timing belt cover is, i know the leak is straight forward but while im at it i figure ill do the timing belt too. i have just picked up all my bits (belts, bearings, gaskets and seals) and was wondering how practical it is to do it myself. im practical enough to be capable of it but still a novice.
i have most of the basic tools and a haynes manual in hand. is there anything else that i should be needing, or is it best to leave it to the real grease monkeys?

    cheers

Give it a go yourself. Theres a couple of good tutorials on here, that should give you an insight to help decide.

I've just done my first on a 300tdi and all went smoothly.

    Cheers,
    Rez

    timing belt

    HI

make sure you really check out the torque settings. they will more than likely differ from the ones in your manual as they have updated a few things. I think it is looser now.

Don't forget the "O" ring that goes behind the crank snout gear/cog, Regards Frank.

    Hi Blackers88,
Undoing the crankshaft pulley nut and doing back up again I found to be the biggest, lets say "challenge", this bolt is seriously tight and if you get it undone OK, it needs to be seriously tight going back on again, as per the manual.
If you do the job step by step, put the right bolts back in the right holes you'll be fine.
I found it a lot easier if you take the radiator out, makes the job easier to see and allows better access to the crankshaft pulley nut, I've made a proper spanner up now for this job works a lot better. Took breaking the pulley to get me there!!!
