Thumbs down Disco Rear wheel bearing

Hey guys had a rumbling from the back of my disco so I dropped her off at the mechanic to have it checked, Got the bad news both rear wheel bearings were screwed and both stub axles needed replacing got quoted $5-600 to fix, with second hand stub axles at $120 each.

Picked her up today with a bill of $975 does this sound right? $194 for bearings and seals? 4 hours labour? Just seemed odd as the final receipt had stub axles Priced at $308 which is higher than what I was told over the phone. I enquired about it but just got told that's how much it cost.

    Cheers guys

25-30% mark up on second hand parts?

    975
    -GST=886.36
    -308 for stub axles = 578.36
    -194 for bearings and seals = 384.36
    /4 hours labour = 96.09 an hour

seems a bit high to me, but then again, i don't go to mechanics for this reason

    Guys
As a shop owner of an Independent LR (plus other makes Like Sprinter van and Hybrid repairs) a repair shop is a business and there to make money.
You have to make more an a few % age points to keep the lights on and invest in new equipment etc, and of course pay taxes!

The labour time is about right for the D1.
The bearings & hub seals about right doing a US$ to A$ he isn't using the same bearings from a LR box more like a Timken package --that would have been more in the US for the same bearings and the fancy LR box thrown in the trash.

If I was using new stubs the price would be again about right, but for a D1, (taking year/age value of the car etc into account) I would be offering the customer the opportunity to install good used take offs.
I get these for $50 US a pop from local sources (like wrecking yards) and I mark them up 30%. to $65 us each.
I would be adding a $25 tariff for sundries to cover, consumables, EPA charges, disposal and stuff like grease, shop towels etc,

Actually there is not a lot of profit on a job like this so I see why the stubs are on the loaded side.
In this business these days the profit is on hi tech electrical/diagnostic and emission repairs.

Its all about menu pricing at the lower end of the repair game like going to McD's for a hamburger--quote" Yah want Big Mac 'n large fries with that mate ??! etc.
I wouldn't say you got ripped off far from it , just a repair bloke making sure you got the best on offer for a price plus some fair to middling profit.
Remember profit is not a dirty word.
Hope that helps you see where the money goes.
    Cheers Dennis

PS I had a ex Melbournite in my shop the other day to collect a car for a friend--First words out of his mouth were "crikey mate this is like a real friendly Auzzie garage like you see back home". (a compliment perhaps?)

thats about right IF its all new parts and probably 30ish% over the mark for reclaimed parts.

His original quote is about right for new wheel bearings and seals on second hand stubs

Why did the stub axles even need replacing? Its not like they get worn out like in the D2's and Jeeps where you can't replace the inner bearing race.

yeah they do, they get lips on them which prevents you from getting the bearings tensioned up correctly, and if youve had a bearing spinning on one its knackerd as well.

in the first instance you can get away with rotating them so the wear spot is up the top IF you dont have ABS.

if you have ABS (in 95 it was available as an option but I havent paid attention to the dash setup on them) the stubs cant be rotated on them to get the lips in a useable place because of the ABS sensor hole.

This pretty much mandates new stubs if they are lipped as second hand ones will usually be lipped in the same place.

very early ABS systems only put the light on IF they had a system fault. check under the hood for an ABS module in the brake system.

Good to know thanks. I'll consider myself lucky that mine is a non-abs.
