unbolt the sump and clean it out.
a high detergent oil will help move it out of the rest of the engine not much beats pulling the plugs and winding dieso through it tho if you REALLY want to shift the goop.
I have heard of cleaning the sludge from the deisel sump by running deisel oil in the motor for a short time, and then draining the sump before the new oil and filter go on.Have any members done this? and does it get rid of much sludge? interested in your thought's on this.

are you talkiing about 300tdi? I took my sump off after 250thou kms to clean it out, wasnt an ounce of sludge in it
Ditto re 300tdi sump lack-of-sludge. One of the redeeming features of that engine.
However, if you want to give the engine a clean up, I've found that the CEM flushing oil concentrate ( Cost Effective Maintenance - Home ) works really well. ( Especially the heavy dose directions using el-cheapo oil) .
